What exactly were those ppl saying when they put her picture up?

When they were asked "What was their first impression on the girl?"

First lady says - "She's beautiful, I think she's beautiful"

Dude holding a baby - "If she was a filipina, she'd be beautiful in my eyes but she is not, so she's not beautiful"

Lady with no front teeth - "Look at her face, she looks scary"

Boy - "Black is ugly, white is beautiful"

Thanks!

I'm actually surprised that anyone said she was beautiful, like the first lady. And I guess the second guy was saying that if she was an Aeta she'd be beautiful, i dunno...

But i think it's funny how in the US, poor people with no teeth are more likely to be ignorant and racist. I guess it's the same in the Philippines...

It isn't even a question if Filipinos racist against dark skinned people. Just look at the popularity of skin whiteners, Vicky Belo nose jobs, discrimination against Aetas, other dark skinned Filipinos with pango noses, thick lips and the popular images of whitewashed media.

its called the phils is being westernized like many other countries...that still doesnt make pinoys racist. Skin Whiteners r just there cuz people want to have the white skinned look so they dont look like farmers or some1 who works outdoors. And the nose job r for those who wants to look better in appearance or "thinks" that having a long pointy nose is perfect.

Discrimination against aetas or dark skinned? thats like in every country... in aussie aboriginals r discrimanted, or in USA or UK the Africans r discriminated...

u might aswell say all countries r racist?

sure there are racist people... but can u really say pinoys in general r racist?

Imitation is the greatest form of flattery. With the exception tanning, not many whites would change their physical appearance to look like Pinoys.

All countries have racist people but not all of them admit it for fear of being labeled. The preferences for white physical features like skin color and aquiline noses are a consequence of media bombarding people with their standards of beauty. But back to the topic. Filipinos, if you live here, do prefer being white with white physical features. Media celebrities often talk in Taglish and project the image of a skin whitening, nose job loving crowd. Philippine society promotes Filipinos with the previously mentioned descriptions faster as compared to their darker, pango nosed counterparts.

Actually, Filipinos think that Caucasian skin is rough/coarse. I don't think Filipinos would want to be white as Caucasians. They just like to be lighter. The lightest that they can get just like an office worker who dwells in a city, and not like a tanned farmer from the province. They want the "City Boy" "City Girl" look. In the Philippines, the probinsyano is being discriminated. "Promdi" (Probinsyano, mostly used in Luzon) and "Kidbu" or Kidbolites" (Taga bukid, used in Vis-Min) are derogatory terms. So Filipinos mostly teens and some middle age too will shake heaven and earth to get rid of any traces of that "farmer look" which carries with it a lot of "evil" connotations. Not only skin whiteners, but tongue training to hide the accent will get them to achieve that "city look".

Tracy Isabel Borres’ Statement on Facebook Scandal
Tags: Asian | Ateneo | Facebook | Filipina | Philippines | Privacy | Social Networks | Tracy Isabel Borres

Tracy Isabel BorresFilipina college student Tracy Isabel Borres recently interacted with the indigenous Filipino Aeta tribe on an Ateneo de Manila University field trip. She posted nasty things about the tribe on her Facebook page, for only her friends to see. She thought the posts were funny.

One of Tracy’s Facebook friends did not find the posts funny. She found them so unfunny that she took screenshots and circulated them via email. The screenshots are now making the rounds on Filipino mailing lists.

I find Tracy’s posts horribly racist. In fact, I find them so offensive that I will not republish them here. Maybe they were meant to amuse her friends, but they certainly did not amuse me. Nevertheless, I do not condone her friend’s treachery.

I decided to hear Tracy’s side of the story. Here’s her statement.

Yes I am fully aware of the gravity and extent of what is happening right now, but thank you still. =)

Someone stole it from my CONTACTS only account. Sigh sigh. Thing is i know how rude and offensive it sounded but that was because I was expecting it to be read by my friends only who understood a kind of dark quirky humor of mine that really would make other people mad. It was a post meant to be comical for my friends to laugh at… (exaggerated rudeness and ditzy-ness, although still not with some truth to it of course, i am not excusing my insensitive usage of words but hey! its funny WITH/FOR my friends!) then of course it leaked. Sigh sigh.

I am just waiting for this to blow over (as typical ‘internet sensations’ usually do), because seriously. People, focus on real issues not on some spoiled sheltered girl. Haha.

if anything, i would rather you forward my reply to the email. =)

i mean really. there are so many ppl out there who are just so ready and willing to jump at every and any opportunity to add insult to injury bec it will be inconsequential to them anyway without knowing the premises or without any sense of discernment whatsoever. i mean betrayal for leaking my entry by someone i knew was bad enough right? so now its like i cracked a yo momma joke and everyone thinks i want to kill their momma! hahaha oh sigh sigh.

again, thank you for your concern. =)

If I were Tracy, I’d either watch what I say or scrub my friends list. People whine all the time about privacy on the Internet — but no privacy protocol can survive a breach of trust.

All Asian countries are somehow prejudice of dark skinned people. There is a toothpaste in china called "black man" its names that way since darker skinned people are stereotyped to have white teeth due to the contrast between their skin. When they smile their teeth seem whiter, whiter teeth from a tooth paste get it?

Is it really the complexion in this case or is it race itself? There are blacks lighter than some Filipinos and Filipinos darker than some blacks. Would the concept of the video imply that if a dark Filipino and a light black person were together in the Philippines, that the darker Filipino would be treated worse than the black person who is lighter?

It's not prejudice towards race like whites' treatment of blacks but prejudice towards physical looks.
For some Filipinos, a lighter skin complexion is more attractive. But it doesn't mean the lighter the skin, the better.
The skin tone of Caucasians are too light for some Filipinos' taste.
They prefer the skin tone of the lightest Asians.

Lighter skin of black person than a Filipino?....Maybe you mean Mulatto.

Not only skin color. Hair should be straight. Even with just a little wavy hair in the Philippines may draw insults like "here's a panty....cover your head...you're exposing your pubic hair".

And if you happen to have wavy hair, they don't call you by your name. They call you "kulot", which is derogatory - so how much more if your hair is afro type.

If you happen to have an argument with anybody, you better make sure your hair is straight. Wavy haired people are believed to be short-tempered and unreasonable. "kulot ang pag-iisip" "kulot baluktot" "ugaling kulot"

Other racist terms are: "maitim pa sa puwet ng kawali", "nognog", "kasing-kulay nya ang kanyang budhi", "lagum"(visayan), "ngitngit pa sa alkitran"(visayan)

I tell you, the Filipinos are not sensitive to all these racist terms. On the contrary, they derive fun out of it. These actually are a source of laughter.

Filipinos don't think like Americans.

"Should" be straight? Wavy hair is bad in the Philippines? That doesn't make sense.
"Wavy haired" is an insult? Weird mentality.

Watching that vid was upsetting. I just wish that there is some way to change this kind of "colonial" mentality in the Philippines. If there is sign me up. Our ancestors who revolted and fought for equality would be like "wtf!" if they were to know whats going on right now.

Skin whiteners, Belo, and TFC/GMA ..oh my!

I wouldn't mind looking southeast asian.

Its more about complextion. I have cousins that are really dark and they got called the same names that apply to black people.

Yes, there are some black people that are lighter than Filipinos. Here's my friend. She's considered black in America. What would she be considered in the Philippines?

I've never seen a light skinned black unless he has some other blood in him like native indian, white, hispanic. Well, if you consider Arabs and Egyptians to be blacks, then that's a different story.
Filipinos generally have straight black to dark brown hair. If you don't belong to this group, people will notice you. You may become the object of jokes.
If the waves are not too close, it may possibly blend. But if the waves are too close, it can catch attention. You may not be spared being called "nognog".
It's not weird mentality. It's the truth.

Now how do you think people in Nigeria react to a Nigerian born with straight hair like that of a Filipino hair? Weird mentality?

Wow. She's gorgeous.

I know she's considered black in America. She clearly has traces of other race in her though.
In America, even if you generally look white, white people won't consider you white anymore if you have a tiny drop of black blood.
In the Philippines, they acknowledge your mixture.
So in the Philippines, she would be considered mestiza black-white.
