Amara

Don't cast evil eye on that poor child! Hehehe...

@Amara

LOL... I know what you mean. The Hmong custom of not saying how cute/beautiful a baby is actually means the opposite. icon_smile.gif

@Hapa

I know. She is 2 yrs old now.
She also has European blood in her.

She's not a poor child. LOL.
Everyone loves her.
I am her god father as well as her uncle.
Amara
I didn't mean poor in that sense. More along the lines of "defenseless".

Anyways, I have a lot of bi-racial cousins, nieces and nephews as well-- half-Mexican, half-Mekas, half-Spaniard. So many I've lost count now, lol.
xeemlauj
I know. lol.
It's so weird going to Hmong new year and seeing so many biracial/mixed Hmong children.

Omg, we're mixing.

Well, I'm mixed also. My maternal great-grandmother was Mien and I'm sure there's been a Chinese or two who crept up into my bloodline somewhere along the way, lol.

So does this mean your niece is going to learn five languages? lol should be fun. biggthumpup.gif

Yes, same here.
Somewhere along the line, I believe my maternal side is not Hmong.
You know Hmong, back in the old day; dating other ethnic groups = NOOOOOOOOoooooOoooooo,
some managed to marry and make babies.

Some Hmong even adopted non-Hmong children.
Like my cousin who was adopted.
He is Lahu (Pu-Teur)

She speaks mostly English/Hmong and some Spanish(DORA THE EXPLORER). lol.
My niece knows how to say (ABAJO) which she pronounces it like this (A BUTT HOLE) lmao..
She can count 1 to 10 in Spanish, Hello and Bye. lol

One of my great aunt (pog) was Bouyei by birth, but was sold to a Hmong couple when she was only a few days old. Never once in her life did she acknowledge her Bouyei bloodline-- to herself and to everyone else, she was Hmong.

Yea. My brother's friend is Thai, but was adopted by Hmong.

Just like lil. He told me a story so similar to yours, except it was his great great great grandfather or something that was sold to a Hmong family. I guess it's common back in Asia, especially in the old days. I'm starting to feel bad for the Bouyei now.

oops. lol..

My dad told me that my ancestors(from paternal side) married "MAB" or Yi women or maybe either Bai/Lisu...

I don't see why you should feel sorry for them. They sold their flesh and blood out of their own free will, no one forced them to.

My great aunt's "official" age at the time of her death was 82-- but according to the elders in my family, she was at least a hundred years old but no one knows the exact year she was born. All they know is that she was brought out of China into Laos when her Hmong parents migrated from Yunnan.

You can't put a price on a human being. Or at least you shouldn't be able to. That's my philosophy, anyway.

I am half Korean and half Hmong. My father is Korean and my mother is Hmong (a Vang) but because my parents speak different languages, I don't speak either icon_sad.gif Although because I grew up around a lot of my Hmong cousins, I can understand Hmong, I just can't read, write or speak it (well I know little baby words). Instead, I speak french and spanish sure.gif which is kind of ironic since I am Asian icon_wink.gif I am proud to be from both backgrounds although when people ask me what ethnicity I am (because I DO look mixed..) and I tell them, I always get the "what's Hmong?...OHHHHH THOSE KIDS FROM THE GRAN TORINO!!!!" laugh.gif

I am originally from Minnesota but I live in Chicago now (for school). I know, I never realized how rare it was until I got older and my mom told me...growing up it never crossed my mind that it was "rare" to be half korean and half hmong. You can check me out on facebook, my email is paige.ek@gmail.com. I have a couple old pictures of my family and I, if you look my dad looks REALLY korean (I mean, typical korean guy) and my mom actually doesn't look very hmong, because she has high cheekbones she is always mistaken as mixed or something. My brothers on the other hand look completely Korean. I hardly see the Hmong in them.

Okay well here are a few of me and some of my family so you can see the differences. The family ones are about a year and a half old cause most of them are at the home computer, so those are kind of dated, my brothers still look little icon_wink.gif

These two are the most recent of me

As you can see in this one, my mom is on the left, my two brothers (TWINS! but are fraternal), myself (sorry, my eyes are always red in pictures..) and my dad

One with just my dad and brothers...I think my brothers look super Korean, definitely more than Hmong!

This one is also kind of recent so I just decided to put it up. There ya go.

Now I have a question...do YOU think I look more Hmong or more Korean? I get about mixed feelings. I feel like when I'm standing next to my dad people tell me I look definitely more Korean, but when I'm standing next to my mom, people tell me I look a lot like her.

babyshanker
You look Hmong your brothers look more Korean with tanner skin.
lilasiankid
Ya'll look pretty Hmong to me. Your dad even looks like he could be Hmong. embarassedlaugh.gif

You should learn Hmong and Korean because of your background and also it's good to be multilingual in today's world. Add that to your Spanish, French and English.
Ties
You look like a Korean wannabe.... jk laugh.gif

I was at the mall this one time when this little nee-ger black kid was staring at me and I was about to
give him the finger when he asked me, in perfect Hmong, what my name was biggrin.gif

Just kidding about the first part, but really a little black kid at the mall asked me in perfect Hmong what my name was.
I was really shocked SHOCKED.gif , turns out he was mixed.

Black chicks tell me all the time that they find black-azns "fine as hell" lol

Merci beaucoup! Vous etes tres sympatique! icon_smile.gif

My mom always tells me that when I was younger I looked more Hmong cause I had a thinner, longer face, but as I've grown older, I've gotten the more wide face that my dad has. I know you probably are all thinking that Korean women have beautiful thin faces from seeing K dramas and stuff but it's not the truth!! Besides getting the epicanthic fold (crease on the eyes) and rhinoplasty, getting their jawline shaved down to thin out the face is a huge cosmetic procedure there! So I guess if I want that, I'm gonna have to get plastic surgery....haha jk jk embarassedlaugh.gif

I do think that my brothers and I all look different from each other though which is funny. My brothers are twins (fraternal) but don't even look like they're the same age, nor from the same family (maybe could pass as cousins, but definitely don't look like brothers)

And then I think I look totally different from the family...hehe

Weird how things like that work out.

I do hope one day to learn Korean and Hmong...Hmong I think could be easier bc I already understand it, its just a matter of actually trying to speak it and remember words and stuff. I think its just harder because its not really a language that you can just see everywhere and buy software to learn, its all oral and you just learn by ear.

Korean, ahh to be honest, I think is really hard!!!! I've watched a lot of movies/dramas and listened to music but I can't even make the right phonetics they make!!! My brothers actually can read and write it bc my dad sends them to a Korean school every Sunday where they learn the language (I think thats funny when he can just teach us himself!) but they actually do learn a lot there. I remember my dad wanted me to do it when I was younger but come on...who wants to go to an extra day of school when you're 12?! But now I wish I had done it. laugh.gif
lilasiankid
So do you get any attention from Korean wannabe's? They'd love to be in your position. laugh.gif
jedi77
You guys all look Hmong to me. Koreans distinctively look different with higher cheek bones and lighter skin but I think another Asian ethnic group mixing with another is not going to result in a noticeable difference.
lilasiankid
The distinct physical traits generally associated with Koreans aren't as prevalent. You're all within that range where "everyone kinda looks alike" if you know what I mean. laugh.gif

I don't so much, I guess cause maybe people my age aren't so hyped up about it? (I'm really shy and prefer it this way :] ) My brothers on the other hand...holy crap. They got girls chasing them everywhere and I'm not saying they're not cute, but I mean...they're not like kpop stars, you know what I'm saying?! Obviously the pictures are a little dated, they're in high school now but I've got a feeling that a lot of girls are after them cause they're half korean. Its just funny, my mom is a teacher in St. Paul (there is a huge hmong community there for those that aren't familiar with MN) and she's even got her students asking her to pass on their phone numbers! embarassedlaugh.gif It's too funny really.

The youngest of the two is a total ladies man so he loves the attention. The oldest is really independent so I think he breaks a lot of hearts when it comes to it. He's the type that just focuses on personal goals and always says he "doesn't have time for girls". Hehe
trueblueaddictor
In my opinion, you look like Hmong. Your brothers could pass for Koreans but just as likely as Hmong.
lilasiankid
I'm looking at my uncles/aunts pictures in France and looks like I will have a lot of half French half Hmong cousins and nephews/nieces. My grandpas are strict ,brutal, heartless, traditional folks but now they can't stop their children from marrying French guys and gals. Good for them!

I would be scared to be my grandpa's kids. Can you imagine your father being traditional and strict while being bigger and stronger man than you? Being able to whoop your @$$ even when you are in your mid 20's! eek.gif
jedi77
The U.S. is a great melting pot, it's inevitable that Hmong will have biracial kids. You guys know the saying once you go black you ain't coming back but according to the movie white chick's once you go black you gonna go into a wheelchair...lol...I got one that I made up, once you go Caucasian you ain't gonna go back to Asian...lol...

I'm living in Korea right now and I think there's a lot of similar traits in Hmongs and Koreans. There are those few people who you look at and you just can tell what they are, but it's harder to tell with most people. A lot of Koreans here, could easily pass for Hmongs just like a lot of Hmongs could easily pass for Koreans. I guarantee you, if you were to go to Seoul station and mix in a few random Hmongs into the crowd of Koreans, you wouldn't be able to pick them out. You guys could pass for either one. Same goes for your mother and your father.
lilasiankid
This weekend I saw a Hmong kid with very Chinesey eyes. It was probably the first thing you'd notice about him. Straight outta them old paintings. The type of eyes that people always stereotype Asians with:

(no offense to him btw)

I mentioned it to someone and found out that he was actually half Korean! First time I saw one! Interesting. His dad was Korean...parents met in school I believe.

Hmong girls will love him when he's older just for that hahah. embarassedlaugh.gif

No, I don't think it's her family (The half korean girl that posted up her family. Where are you these days btw?) The boy was alot younger than these kids. He was probably like 10 years old BUT I did see the father and he looked pretty much the same as the father in these pics lol. Glasses and all too.
