I've been reading a lot about what people think should be done about the situation in Cambodia. I'm here to ask the how. Its obvious there are many things wrong with the country but where do WE start? Do I write a letter to some US congressman begging, pleading, crying for his help? Do I accept that the country is "doing well" and hope that things will get better from there? Do I wait for a new leader, someone who cares to step in and clean up the mess with a vision and resolve that will actually get something done? Who knows. Better question is who cares? I wish I could say I care enough for all the people there to do something. But there are too many questions, too many road blocks, too many struggles that can get in the way. I wish I had an answer, but all I have are questions.

The obvious. There are some obvious things that anyone can see are wrong with the country.

Leadership(or lack there of) who cares about nothing more than his own pockets and well being rather than making changes for HIS country. The fact there there seems no end in sight for this type of leadership.
Education of the people that EMPOWERS them to create the changes for themselves. But who will educate the people if the government won't.
Firesale of the country. Soon Japan, South Korea, and Europe will own more of Cambodia than Cambodians do.
Lack of a Global Economic power.

Seems like Cambodia is f***ed.

I have a solution for Cambodia.

Become a province of Vietnam and the Vietnamese government will care about Cambodia four you.

I think that this is the best solution for Cambodia itself and their people.

Let your nationalism away and think of the future of your children and grandchildren, please. icon_smile.gif

You donīt get it.

The difference between Vietnam and Cambodia is that Vietnam can control itself economically and politically very well, but you canīt say it for Cambodia. As for the population increase, Vietnam still has enough land to have a population about 100 millions, therefore we donīt need more land.

I am sure about it. You can figure it yourself out, if you look at the population density of Vietnam.

There are many reason, why there are so many Vietnamese living in Cambodia. They are as followed:

1. Cambodia used to belong to Vietnam under the Nguyen Dynasty in the 19th century with the name "Trấn Tây Thānh" and a lot of Vietnam were forced more or less to settle down in Cambodia.

2. More Vietnamese came to Cambodia when Vietnam occupied Cambodia since 1979.

3. They have to go to work there.

4. They are overseas students.

5. It is somehow a secret plan of the Vietnamese governtment to colonize Cambodia by letting little by little Vietnamese going there. The same case happanes to/in Laos.(Almost half of the population of Laos is Vietnamese)

Vietnam used to belong to China for over 1000 years, they should have the right to claim back their territory! I thought Vietnam is a well stablized country both econimically and politically lolz! Why do you guys need to use other peoples resources lol! The truth is, Vietnam is still a poor country ! True story! Watch out Chinaman is coming lol embarassedlaugh.gif

China has no right to claim back Vietnamese territories, because before the Chinese occupation, these lands belonged to Vietnam. Moreover, the central part and southern part of Vietnam never belonged to China.

But after your logic, Vietnam also has the rights to claim back Cambodia, Laos and South China, because they used to belong to Vietnam, too. See how it works?

Vietnam is now economically and politically stabil, but if Vietnam wants to be the superpower in the future in Southeast Asia, it needs more resources.

In the 20th century, Vietnam had at least 5 major wars with 3 superpowers. Although Vietnam won them, they still demaged Vietnam economically and politically hard. What about Cambodia? It got much less wars, yet it is still clearly much poorer and behind Vietnam. Vietnam has/had got the second fastest economy after just after China. This is also true story. I know, truth hurts, no? icon_wink.gif

lolz.. But as of right now Vietnam is still a poor country! Why can't you compare you're poor country to America, China, or Japan! Oh that's right, your country is still a developing poor country. As of right now you need to compare your poor country to Cambodia in order to make yourself feel good lolz! So much of winning battles and at the end, got nothing! Truth hurts lolz! Vietnam is still a poor country lolz! Be proud of your ancestors! embarassedlaugh.gif

You are such an idiot.

Compare a country like Vietnam that has had many wars recently to countries like America, China and Japan that had more non-wars times? You a such a fool!

I just wanted to say that although Vietnam had many major wars, it is still able to develop well. But you can not say the same thing for Cambodia.

Yeah, I am proud of my ancestors.

Btw: If I were you, I would be thankful to Vietnam, because if it was not Vietnam that invaded Cambodia in 1979 and brought down the khmer rouge government, you would not be on this earth and there would not be Cambodia. Think about it. Truth hurts. biggrin.gif

@ Sirikit: Thank u for sharing this thread its really helpful.

Im proud to be a Vietnamese and proud of our culture as well. But actually i feel unhappy due to too much chinese influence in vietnam... One professor said "In Vietnam history, the Indian influence was received spontaneously. Meanwhile Vietnamese was compelled to receive Chinese culture for existing and fighting through the centuries"..

I feel some sad when thinking we are cuturally different from other SEAsian countries... Its too Sino! One of my cousin once twisted her face with me while reading her history textbook, saying me "Chinese chinese why always chinese in history book? Why Thailand, Malaysia, Cambodia, Burma ect.. all have indian influence and we have less?"

i answered her. "You still look very Southeast asian and less chinese look on ur face Lien(her name). And above of all ur a real Viet". She laughed!

What has this to do with being an idiot?

I want to be one, because I like their people, especially girls. What is wrong?

Moreover, this has nothing to do with the topic.

You certainly talked like one........

And if you implied that Vietnam invaded Cambodia for the sole reason of saving the existence the Cambodians and Cambodia, then you assumed too much.
The main the reason of the Vietnamese invasion was..............Wait, why am I even replying to you.....you're not even Vietnamese. Never mind.

Chinaīs last big war: Civil War (1945-1949)
Japanīs last big war: World war 2 (1939-1945)
Americaīs last big war: World war 2 (1939-1945)

Vietnamīs last big war: Vietnam war (1945-1975)

You see? The other countries had much more times to recover from the wars. Not to mention the Americanīs trade embargo on Vietnam after the Vietnam war.

Alright, since you asked.........

Vietnam's main reason was to topple the KR regime, that's it. The KR was never friendly with Vietnam. They also harassed Vietnam a few times militarily. In addition, the KR was China's main henchmen in Southeast Asia. Vietnam could not afford to have her main adversary on both sides of the border (north and south).

The stopping of the killing fields, and, thus, saving lives of the Cambodians were just the consequences of the invasion. It was the bonus that Vietnam gladly took credit for. It was like the shooting two birds with one arrow analogy.

The brokedown of the KR was a blessing to both the Cambodians and the Vietnamese. I do give the Vietnamese people credits for doing what they did, which resulted in lives of Cambodians being saved. beerchug.gif
