Full Version: Problems with Denon 2930 DVD player

I bought a Denon 2930 DVD player based on good reviews I had read in the press and online, but my unit sometimes gives a picture that is jerky, stop-start and blocky.
I exchanged that unit and got a new one, but it is doing exactly the same thing.
Also the menus on some discs don't get displayed correctly by my 2930, with titles, tabs and buttons being out of alignment.

When I play the same discs on my old cheapo Sharp DV-SL 1000W player, the menus display correctly and the movies play normally.

I had thought that a Denon 2930 would be a step up in quality, but it has caused nothing but trouble.
Has anyone else had this problem ?

Are you getting the problems with just copied discs or the original silver surface discs? Some players may not like certain brands of discs.
Also, jerky, stop-start and blocky playback is often indicative of a badly burnt disc.

I never even had a chance to play any DVD-R, because the faults I described were happening straight away with genuine pressed DVDs.
So I immediately returned the unit to the place of purchase and they gave me a new unit.
Unfortunately the replacement they gave me also had the same intermittent fault.
I also took this unit back to the shop and we tested a few other 2930 DVD players they had in stock, and these all diplayed the same fault to different degrees.
That is; some 2930s went into stutter mode very quickly, while others only showed the fault very rarely, and the same was true of the menu display errors, with some units having a greater degree of title/tab misalignment than others.
I was told to leave the unit with them and that they would contact Denon for advice.

Update : I have now got a Pioneer BDP-LX71 and it plays all the discs which the Denon 2930 had trouble playing.
So far I have not encountered any problems.
The 2930 does however sound really good for CD music.
