what's more important is GDP per capita I think

China's getting there but it still has a long, long way to go

India has less GDP per capita than Singapore. In your opinon does that make India lesser than Singapore?
Sampanviking
It is a good possibility. If China can achieve its growth of between 6 - 8% and Japan shrinks by at least 6%, (its last results show an annualised shrinking of up to 12%!) China should overtake Japan this year .

what do you mean by lesser or greater . . . comparing national or cultural "greatness" is a waste of time and breath

in terms of standard of living, level of economic development, and/or average income, of course Singapore is "greater" than India

in terms of total output, no . . . however average income is a better indicator of how developed a country is, though of course not the only indicator

small countries are easy to be toppled during crisis. Guess what Singapore is suffering the most in Asia during this economic crisis.
As for Taiwan, not a country to begin with, busy to sign deals with the CPP , fighting to survive economically.

An analogy of that, a delicate flower looks nice and all compare to big tree, but when the heavy thunderstorm, windstorm, hurricane, the flower most likely to get destroyed.

2008 Nominal GDP (in U.S. Dollars)
1 United States 14,330,000
2 Japan 4,844,000
3 China (PRC) 4,222,000

If we assume that the Chinese RMB is undervalued by 50%, then China's nominal GDP has already surpassed Japan's. Furthermore, if we assume that the almighty U.S. dollar is overvalued by 50%, then China's nominal GDP has already surpassed the United States. Frankly speaking, the U.S. dollar is now a worthless piece of paper backed by a national debt of US$ 11 TRILLION and counting...

When will China improve the quality of life of its average citizens...That is the true question.

You mean the improvements like eating cardboard dumplings and working in sweat shops?

Anything to back it up or is this a figment of your imgaination.

Well if it were not for Chinese "Sweatshops" like Tent makers for instance, millions of Americans would now have nowhere to live!

Beggars really are getting more abusive these days.

CHINA'S HIGH-TECH OFFENSIVE
From Sweatshop to Laboratory

By Wieland Wagner

China may still be the world's cut-rate factory for cheap goods, but the giant country is devoting considerable energy to developing its own innovative industries. With Chinese research budgets steadily on the rise, it could soon pose a threat to western high-tech dominance.
