Full Version: Ilocanos in Hawaii

so we moved to oahu last year in been livin in waikiki since november '08.

at my job there are so many pinoys pero lahat sila ay ilokano. and not only that, when u ask them kung pinoy sila ang sagot ay "hell no, i'm ILOCANO, baby!" like they are so damn proud of it. now i'm all for regional pride. being half bisaya myself, i take pride in my regional flavor as well.

pero... siyempre hindi ko makalimutan na pilipina ako. its like i know that i'm pinay first, and Ilongga second. but here in hawaii, ive discovered that the ilokanos have been here even before the japanese, portuguese, samoan, and chinese. they were here working in pinneapple plantations in maui since forever. so yeah... i can see HOW they see themselves as pacific islanders first, and asian second. i actually think that ilocanos look kinda different from most filipinos i know. for instance, they look purely austronesian malay. i see very little chinese/filipino hybrids (here in hawaii) that suzuka always talks about in the forums.

and native hawaiians actually consider pinoys as kama-ina (kama-ayna), a hawaiian term for local. or "one of us". kinda like "kamag-anak" in tagalog.

so yeah, whats ur take on regional pride away from our mahal na bansa ('pinas)?

Yup Hawaii is practically the lost province of Ilocos region lolz. Ang alam ko, most Japanese here are from Okinawans and most Filipinos here are Ilocanos.

I'll probably will never show my face to you kasi nai-submit ko yong headshot ko dito lolz, yong iba kong headshot.... sa baba

PS its kamaaina, so you know how to flash you boobs now... I mean shaka "hang loose" hand

Ilocanos stay to their roots and have pride in their identity. That's the reason why they will tell you what they are and they represent that identity.
The Ilocano history in Hawaii is a long one which is why they are Kamaaina.

Nai-submit ko lang for fun, sa picture forum, kasi and title ng post was "Post your headshot here", then di nila alam yong headshot naman pala sa baba so na-lolz ako. it was like 2 years ago.

I usually shop at ala moana, most of my clothes are Hollister, AE, A&F, and some Ruehl (all in Ala Moana). I go to Pearlridge for Ecko stuff, my sis like to shop at Waikele, she like the Bebe clothes there. Day off ko di ngayon but back to work tomorrow. So tapos ka ng mag-around da island? Leeward > Ko Olina, Water park; Windward > hmm ano bang nasa Windward, valley of the temple? Sea Life Park, Pali lookout; Northshore > Northshore beach, Waimea Falls.

I've found that true with Ilocanos everywhere, up in Canada, and here in Tennessee. They take pride in being Ilocano. They speak Ilocano around each other, or sometimes even when there are non-Ilocanos around. And yes, i've noticed that they do look a bit different. They look kinda Pacific Islander. I think they have heavy Negrito admixture

negrito as in melanesian? yes true but that still doesnt take into account the height increase among them. ilocanos from hawaii are as tall as native hawaiians. about 5'7 for women and six foot and above for men. arent negritos short and squat?

An Ilocano thread.. hmmm.

I can speak Ilocano though my family is from Pangasinan. I associate myself more being a Pangasinense than Ilocano. I'm sure not all Ilocanos in Hawaii are Ilocano-Ilocano. Others are Pangasinenses who can speak Ilocano. icon_wink.gif

Actually the first Filipinos who went to Hawaii were Bisayans but were later on outnumbered by those coming from Region1.

Same in Mindanao. Whenever 10 Pangasinenses gather and speak Pangalatok, they shift to Ilocano right away when an Ilocano joins them. It's because Ilocanos can't speak Pangasinense but Pangasinenses are able to speak Ilocano.

Many Ilocanos in Mindanao are actually originally Pangalatok from Central Pangasinan. Like Cayabyab, Mamaril, Bongato.
