good news, finally vietnam can have something against the PLAN.

I am really tired of reading the constant complains of PLAN against unarmed viet fishmen/sea pirates or viet navy /w outdated equipments. If it's against viet sub fleet then it would viewed totally different.

PLAN bought this type of boat in the 90s and knows it inside/out.. It's a good boat to have for starters.

On August 25, 2006, Israel signed a deal with Germany to purchase two additional submarines, a deal valued at $1.3 billion, with Germany financing one-third of the total cost.[1]

SSK Dolphin Class Attack Submarine, Israel

Israel's three Dolphin Class submarines were designed by Ingenieurkontor Lubeck Prof Gabler Nachf GmbH (IKL), a subsidiary of Howaldtswerke-Deutche Werft AG (HDW) based in Lubeck, Germany. A schedule had originally been planned for the construction of the three submarines by an industrial team consisting of HDW and Thyssen Nordseewerke, lead by Litton Ingalls Shipbuilding, but the project was cancelled in 1990.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Type_212_submarine

The German Type 212 is a highly advanced design of non-nuclear submarine (U-Boat) developed by Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft AG (HDW) for the German Navy. It features diesel propulsion and an additional air-independent propulsion (AIP) system using Siemens proton exchange membrane (PEM) hydrogen fuel cells. The submarine can operate at high speed on diesel power or switch to the AIP system for silent slow cruising, staying submerged for up to three weeks without surfacing and with no exhaust heat. The system is also said to be vibration-free, extremely quiet and virtually undetectable.

Type 212 is the first of the only two fuel cell propulsion system equipped submarines ready for series production by 2007, the other being the Project 677 Lada class submarine designed by Russian Rubin Design Bureau.

Spending such a large amount of money for six submarines is a great move for Vietnam but unless the country's tiny defence budget could cover crew training and maintenance, the Kilo submarines will be absolutely useless. I hope Vietnam have the resources to maintain those complicated technologies.

Vietnam still flies the Mig21 so you can be assured how good Vietnam can maintaince the equipment

Those subs can effectively block China's trade route through the East Sea and Mallaca Strait and cripple China's economy within a few months. China's oil & gas pipe lines to Indian Ocean wont be completed till at least 2020.

On China's part, it can officially declare a war on you and unlikely 1979, now it can easily march to HCM instead of just hanoi.

I guess you failed to realized this isn't the last great oil deposits surrounding the Spratly's Island perimeter. China has only a hand full of Spratly's Island under its territory. Remember who really owns the others half? Yeah, i guess you forgot to mention about that part too. Besides, if China makes a break for war--- lots and lots of countries would love to see China suck mud bottom. Nobody and i do mean NOBODY likes China.

Using submarine to attack unarmed commercial ship is serious offense. This time, It's won't be just naval skirmish and battles on the island. It's justifiable to declare a formal war by any international standard. UN would first condemn vietnam's action. After the condemnation, China would then have the excuse to finish it once and for all.

It's not just a simple matter of being like or not like as you mentioned.

don't play with dangerous fire or risk of burning your whole house down.

There are about 60 occupied islands/reefs at Spratly Islands.

Vietnam occupy almost half of them and the other halves are occupied by Philippines, China, Malaysia, and Taiwan.

The Chinese access to oil and gas resources is vital to economic growth and stalled economic growth could cause instability and ultimately the collapse of their nation of 1.3 billion people.
South China Sea: Chinese activities in the region are less about territorial claims than "protecting or denying the transit of tankers through the South China Sea".
It is building up its military forces in the region to be able to "project air and sea power" from the mainland and Hainan Island

VLADIVOSTOK, June 19 (RIA Novosti) - A naval task force from Russia's Pacific Fleet docked in Vietnam on Friday on an official visit, a spokesman for the fleet said.

The task force, led by the Admiral Panteleyev destroyer, is heading back to base in Vladivostok after an anti-piracy mission in the Gulf of Aden. The Udaloy-class destroyer, accompanied by a salvage tugboat and two tankers, joined the international anti-piracy operations on April 27.

The two sides created the Web site in 2006 amid great fanfare in order to promote bilateral trade. But it became embroiled in their dispute over the Paracel islands in the South China Sea, over which both countries claim sovereignty. The dispute over the Web site began when China posted an article blasting Vietnam's claim to the Paracels. The article was posted by the Chinese Ministry of Trade, which ran the site with Vietnam's trade ministry.

well this came from Taiwan's China post. I wonder what that article really said. but if it's one sided as China Post suggests, it was a dumb thing to do I agree.

Rosoboronexport says no deal reached yet for sale of Kilo class submarines to Vietnam
ST. PETERSBURG June 26

Rosoboronexport is not yet engaged in talks with Vietnam and Egypt regarding the possible delivery of Project 636 diesel-electric submarines to these countries, but it is ready to start such negotiations as soon as its foreign partners display their interest in them, Oleg Azizov, head of the Russian arms trader’s naval department, told journalists in St. Petersburg on Friday.

“If Vietnamese partners make their choice in favor of Project 636, we will begin detailed negotiations with them,” Azizov said.

Egypt has “not yet made its decision regarding this issue, either,” he added.
