thoughts, opinions? I'm a fan of a few anime but don't really read manga

a lot of white kids who watch anime or read manga are really dorky and nerdy
how do you guys think an "otaku" (sp?) is viewed here in america?
discotheque
definitely american folks equate manga and anime with being a geek
I think the otaku population is quite small in america so alot of people don't even know what otaku means. but in the original context its negative..its like the same thing as being a loner, antisocial, etc.

but realistically people don't really give a crap unless you're a weirdo

Dkiwi seems to have a strange mistaken notion of superiority because he is an anime fan. The worst part was that he posted it in a forum where people scream insults at each other because their cosplays are lousy and others are horrified at their favourite characters being sullied. A quick scan of the threads in the forum yielded a post screaming about how EVIL ODEX is going to arrest them all, right under a post about where to get Darker than Black fansubs. Lol, not the brightest bunch are we? Anyway, I think you can’t really classify people based on their hobbies, but if we take the average, it can be concluded that anime fans are actually worse off than the average person in another hobby.

No, the same stigma about people who like video games, but things will change with time.

Comics was geeky, until is adapted itself into multi-million blockbuster

Video games was geeky until it exploded and becoming mainstream in peoples life

Same thing about anime and manga

First time I hit college I went to the computer lab and just saw tons of 18-30 year olds just sitting in front of their computers watching Japanese cartoons and playing Digimon cards at the cafeterias. embarassedlaugh.gif That was when I realized how popular anime was. I dunno how people can watch some of those shows, like that one with the orange jumpsuit kid with the blue band on his head, Bleach or something? and I think someone kept telling me to watch some show (or was it a book?) called "Death Threat" because they couldn't sleep after reading it or whatever. embarassedlaugh.gif I tell ya those Japanese anime will give a nigga seizures! laugh.gif

Most of the anime freaks up here are pretty emo looking. embarassedlaugh.gif

Only anime I watched and enjoyed was "Ninja Scroll", "Princess Mononoke" and "Sword of the Stranger" since those ones weren't retarded with people spazzing out all the time. Oh yeah I did watch a bit of Pokemon when I was in middle school too. embarassedlaugh.gif

This is how I view Otaku in America laugh.gif

I don't get the correlation of anime and manga to "socially inept people". I watch anime and read manga, not religiously, and I don't find anything "geeky" about it. Granted, I used to go to anime meets in NYC where I turned out to be one of the few "socially capable girls" there, but some (emphasizing some cause there were the typical "omigod its a girl, I must touch her! Kawaiiiii!!! people, too) of the people I met were as normal as I am.
jrockerz
you can be any kind of geek

I don't think so. Really, it's just another form of entertainment.. what's the difference between it and let's say... a movie?

Only reason I would think why anime and such is now so closely related to geeky is because of some... "examples" out there who are really obsessed..
