I think we Southern Viet understand Northern Viet more because Northern Vietnamese is more "publicized". I mean it's the standard Vietnamese and it matches our writing. So by just learning the Vietnamese writing, you basically learn Northern Vietnamese. We also have our national channels spoken in Northern Vietnamese so it's very widespread and easily understood by other Vietnamese.

Then Northern Vietnamese understand Southern Vietnamese more because Saigon is the economic and commercial center of Vietnam and it produces the largest number of movies, drama, and other entertainment in Vietnam. Most Chinese movies (mainly from Hong Kong) are also dubbed in Southern accent (I guess it's because Southern accent sounds more like Cantonese). So Southern Vietnamese also became widespread and understood by other Vietnamese.

But the poor Central Vietnamese got left out and not many people understand it well because it's not as widespread.


So now let's have some fun and learn about the dialect of Central brothers and sisters

(p/s: PLEASE don't google for these sentences to find out their meanings because you'll ruin the fun!!!

(btw, spellings in all of the following sentences don't match standard Vietnamese spelling. The words are spelled the way Hue people speak them. So try to figure out. I know for the most part, the words look foreign and unfamiliar to us, but think of spelling Vietnamese the way Southern Vietnamese actually speak them, the word would look as foreign and unfamiliar to other Vietnamese if Southern Vietnamese wasn't as widespread).

You got the "xơi cơm" part right, but the "bố mẹ" part wrong.

So here's the lesson,

The s/x in standard Vietnamese is changed to th in Hue dialect. Therefore,
Sài gòn becomes Thầy Gòn
Xơi becomes Thời
Sòng phẳng becomes Thòng phẳng
...

This process of changing s/x to th/t used to happen throughout all Vietnam. As you can see Shang Hai became Thượng Hải, Shao Lin ~ Thiếu Lâm, Xiao Jie ~ Tiểu Thư...and so on.

But now this process has stopped happening in all Vietnamese except Hue dialect.

Look at the dialects like dỏm, đã (sướng), tùm lum, dả bộ (giả vờ), ảnh, ẻm...These words originally only exist in Southern Vietnamese, but they got widespread and merged into the national language because of the widespread of media in Southern Vietnam. Imagine if Southern Vietnamese wasn't widespread, other Vietnamese would probably have trouble understanding words like "đã" and "tùm lum"

Haha it's funny cuz I actually speak with a Southern dialect too... especially with my mom, it's like 80%... with my dad somehow I subconsciously try to pronounce words more correctly, so it's like 60%.

well I can't speak Northern Vietnamese perfectly, the Southern Vietnamese accent in me will always show up subconsciously. I'm not sure if I'd be able to speak Northern Vietnamese well after several years of living in Northern Vietnam.
