People try to take advantage of Asians everywhere. Just be aware of that as you continue to live.

I lived in New York City for a while, lived in Harlem at 145th and Upper East Side as well, surrounded by blacks, Africans and Dominican's, Italians, Irish, plain ol' White Americans, Jews, Koreans, Chinese, Koreans, and Russians.

Yes, as much as a melting pot as it is in NYC, there is a lot of hostility against Asians, especially from blacks and Latinos. Walking by, Latinos would just blurt out "chinito" and blacks hate you just as much as they hate YT. There's some racism from whites, but to be honest, the most racism I've ever experienced from a white person up there is when they mistook me for being Chinese, and that's about it.

I agree. I'm living in NYC and discrimination comes mostly from blacks, I guess because they envy the Asians. Latinos especially young Puerto Ricans are arrogants. You will encounter discrimination from whites (mostly rich jews) only if you work for them. Those represent only a little percentage of their population here. So just take it in stride as it will not affect your peaceful living here. Welcome to New York.

Born and raised in NY.. I think there is racism anywhere you go. There are racism in NY, but i don't encounter it much.

Thanks Ben!

Have a lovely weekend.

yeah.. it also depends on where you live.. if you live in a predominant black, latino, or any other neighborhood that consist of mostly one ethnicity, then you might encounter more of it if you're not part of it.. but if you live in a more mixed or similar culture area.. then it'll be rare.

Plus it affects everyone.. not just Asians. Jewish people and black people clashes all the time in certain areas.. same goes with blacks and latinos, and other non Asian group.. Honestly I hear more about racism going on in Europe especially among the soccer craze fans heh

they have jewish sets out there in NY?

Not Asian, but I live in NY. There is bigotry and ignorance here on many levels, but NY does have a large Asian population compared to a lot of other places in the US so it will not be as difficult as elsewhere. About racism coming from certain groups, I live with my fiance (Asian) and our area is almost entirely black with a minority of Latinos. No one bothers him. The only time something racist happened was when some old drunk man came up to him and did some mock Chinese. Most of the comments I've heard from the neighbors are only about how well-mannered he is and how they think we make a nice couple. If you act cool and friendly in certain neighborhoods, most people will not go out of their way to harrass you unless you have a paranoid demeanor about you (nervousness makes people targets for harrassment, people can sense uneasiness).

In terms of Latin-Asian relations, I really don't know much about that. In my previous neighborhood (majority Latino) there was a significant number of Asians mixed into the general demographics and I don't recall hearing about any real conflicts. Again, not that I'd really know...but there were several Asian businesses that had catered to both Asians and Latinos and there were Latino workers in Asian restaurants and supermarkets in the area.

There can always be instances of racism anywhere at any time, but in general I think NY is more welcoming to diversity regardless of the group than other cities.

I don't live in NY, but I do agree that my husband has only had someone say something racist to him once, and it was making fn of him about being chinese (he's not chinese, he's korean/japanese).
racism is everywhere with every group of people

Agree with Ben! I've been all over and realize that there is racial dis everywhere. It's just a matter of time and location. Well, why do you care? They ain't nothing but hypocrites.

I don't encounter that much these days comparing to 28 years ago when I first came here from Hong Kong. Still, I never let my guard down. In some neighborhoods, you really have to watch your back just in case! Street smart is the only way to survive in this diverse city.
Racism is part of the American "culture," so you really cannot avoid it!
