First, those slant eye pictures, now this crap.
Damn, what is wrong with the people in Spain?

http://www.latina.com/lifestyle/news-polit...-lewis-hamilton

QUOTE
At yesterday's Spanish Grand Prix, Formula One racer Lewis Hamilton was met by fans dressed up in blackface and taunting him for the color of his skin. It echoed the same events that had occurred last year in Barcelona, at another Formula One race in which Hamilton was repeatedly harassed by a small group of fans in the crowd.

Eddie Jordan, a famous racing veteran and media analyst, was furious with the blatant display of racism and said, “This is utterly and totally unacceptable. After what happened previously here with Lewis, the fans at this circuit still have a suspended sentence hanging over them.”

Circuit director Ramon Pedrera tried to calm the crowd as the tension escalated, telling the crowd that “No type of offensive behavior can be tolerated.” The sport’s governing body, the FIA, has threatened to pull the Spanish Grand Prix from the circuit, but a spokesman for the FIA insists that “These types of fans are the absolute minority.”

Indeed, Hamilton said just before yesterday's race that Barcelona was one of his favorite cities to visit and that the people were “warm and friendly.” Apparently, Spanish racing fans have started to look down upon Hamilton due to his intense rivalry with a local favorite, driver Fernando Alonso.

Yep, they're racist.

1. Mocking African Soccer Players with N word, Hitler Salute, and throwing bananas...
2. Making slanted eyes during the Beijing Olympic
3. Black face

Racial taunts don't surprise me, I admit that I've become slightly indifferent due to frequent exposure but this is the first time that I've seen racist taunts towards a famous sport star.

I wonder what Spanish racists' attitudes are towards the Mexicans & other Latin peoples in South America.
JakeCutter
Not surprised. These people have no shame.

I wonder what milton has to say about this.

Dumb a$$ racist white trash idiots . ttocs. you get that trash subcore element from Europeon /English football/ soccer fans What about the trash fan groups here in the states. You might get that in Yankee fans or Cleveland fans or Raider fans who taunt the opposing player, but yes the fans here have not currently racially taunt the pro-players baseball/football here . Nevertheless we got trash taunting fans here in the States thumbsdown.gif
Henry123
It just shows how racist Spanish society still is.

The concept of political correctness doesn't at all exist in Spain.

For instance, all East Asians are described as "Chino" regardless of their ethnicity. And if they're looking to insult you more they'll probably call you "chinito/chinita", which literally means "little Chinese guy/girl". Obviously that presents a bit of a problem if you happen to be a tall Asian.

There are racist people all over the world. There is racism in Spanish society, but even with that said one has to be careful inferring to much from what a few people in any particular country do.

I'm born and bred in the U.S. and I would like to think I have no grudge or feeling of superiority over Amerindians in this country (USA), but Amerindians are still used as the mascots of some U.S. sporting teams.

Indian mascots

Blackface has been worn on stage theater in the past for non-racist reasons. A white actor depicting a Moorish Othello in a Shakespearean play for instance (something I prefer, by the way, to the contemporary PC custom in stage theater where a clearly Asian person is presented as the biological child of a black woman and white man). Blackface has been worn for racists purposes too, and that history and tradition originates in the United States. That particular style of blackface whitens around the mouth, to make the impression of exaggerated lips (different then this Spanish guy).

Blackface

QUOTE
Blackface, in the narrow sense is a style of theatrical makeup that originated in the United States, used to take on the appearance of certain archetypes of American racism, especially those of the "happy-go-lucky darky on the plantation" or the "dandified coon ".[1] Blackface in the broader sense includes similarly stereotyped performances even when they do not involve blackface makeup.

In my Africology class this last semester, we had to briefly learn about the sambo, picaninny, coon and.... the term escapes me for the overweight, serving black woman, but I think it might be "mammy."

For instance, Americans in large numbers elected Obama, yet there are a minority of Americans that harbor questionably racist feelings towards him. Such as one baker in New York City.

"Drunken Negro Cookies." Fox News

And of course, there was the cartoon run in a major U.S. news magazine depicting President Obama as a gunned down ape.

Can someone please tell me what spaniards are known for besides chucking tomatoes at each other and running from bulls, and then getting gored up the @$$ by their horns? These people have a huge complex when they come to America because they are sometimes lumped into the "hispanic" category insteasd of white.

Yeah spaniards are quite racist which is hilarious considering a lot of white "purists" consider them no better than hispanics. They are probably just angry that they get mistaken for S. american or mexican. I don't know where they get this superiority complex. History shows that they were only good at killing and raping indigenous, sailing, and running from bulls. I saw the olympics fiasco and I'm not surprised bc they seem very ignorant and hypocritical. I guess it would be hard to make fun of latin features bc they are so generic. They basically look like dark white people. I guess the asian teams could paint their faces brown and wear huge prosthetic noses and curly wigs.

I bet extra hours will reply back trying to contradict me by talking about how asians are poor and unadvanced, how he got an A in his africalogy class, and how spaniards colonized everyone. LOL

Hrmf, no one takes racists seriously anyway. That skinhead is defaming his own country anyway & we don't need to sink to his level by retaliating with more racism.

Actually, I received a final grade of a B in that class. But that is neither here nor there.

I don't care for the centuries of Spanish colonial effort. A handful of European nations got mad wealthy off of exploiting other parts of the world outside their geographical homelands. That kind of thuggery - which is what it was - is not something I approve of.

I assume you live in the United States? My Africology teacher is not from the United States but Haiti even though he has U.S. citizenship. He's a Vodou priest with a Ph.D., trained in both history and political science (political science studies power basically). He is extremely critical of both Europeans colonial past, and of past and present of the United States. He thinks young Americans are only getting dumber.

I think my Africology teacher would point out to you that the United States wiped out 97% of its Amerindian population. He liked stating that in his lectures often.

But perhaps that begs the question of what is an Amerindian in the U.S. since today many of them have the same phenotype (look) of Jerry Sienfeld. There is no mulatto or mestizo category in the U.S., a mulatto is basically black, and a mestizo either ID's as Indian or white. Granted since the year 2000 the U.S. census allows U.S. citizen to check more than one racial box.

Hugo Chavez is a mestizo, but why is it many Indians in the U.S. look like "white men" but the U.S. would not regard an Indian looking mestizo like Chavez as "Indian." Hmm....

Mexico is predominately mestizo - or that is to say by U.S. racial framework: Indian - but we don't call them Indian when they cross over into Texas and California undocumented. We call them illegals or aliens.

Let us go back to the war between Mexico and the United States. Mexicans, or that is to say Indians, used to own Texas and California, that is until the United States pulled a move you complain about the Spanish and stole half of Mexico's territory.

No my friend, you don't know much history, nor have you developed the virtue of critical thought had by a liberal education. What you know is to parrot propaganda. The Spanish are not without fault today or in the past. Arguably that can be said of any nation. However, it is not the Spanish today who run around the world abducting and torturing people (criminal if you ask me) on some crusade against "terrorism" (terrorism is a tactic not an organization - and terror is a hallmark of U.S. strategics). The Spanish pretty much keep to themselves and have developed some fairly comfortable cities now. They have made internal improvements (more than I can say for the U.S. with cities like Detroit and Baltimore).

And I might be wrong but if I remember correctly, Spain has a socialist government today, which would make them less inclined to pursue neo-colonial objectives like the U.S. is prone to.

Anthony Bourdaine would say contemporary Spain is the top culinary center of the Western World now. So, it depends on what you look for I guess. No Reservations episode on Spain

Thank you, Kay.

One of my faults online is to respond in manners to offensive or condescending (spelling?), but I have made improvements on that overtime I think, hopefully with more time I will improve even more. (I hope my response to you in the over population thread was not to snappish or harsh).

its all good.
I know what you ment.
I do try to make sure I don't have spelling problems in what I write. I type to fast for myself, and end up having to go back through and fix it.
I sometimes like to write out agruments to other people on their double standards, just gotten alittle tired of it, and then the typos appear.
so instead of writing out my argument, I just hope someone else does, then I comment "good post", lol.

I know in some countries "black face" is just a cultural fascination and has no negative connotation (for instance the toothpaste "darkie" / "darlie" and other products) but I think you are stretching the truth if you say that this is the case here.
The most likely explanation is that it is a nasty racist taunt because of a dislike (due to sports rivalry) which gotten too far, and it does carry a deliberate negative connotation.

Actually the word "Hispanic" comes from the ancient Romans who used that word (or its root) to denote the Iberian people and region.

The Spanish in Spain are the ones who encouraged the Latin Americans to adopt the identity of "Hispanic." Arguing that they share a common cultural root to Spain and not to the British (this was after Spain lost her colonies to revolutions in Latin America and wanted Latin Americans to rebuff Anglo-American and British commercial and political influence in Latin America).

Some Southern Spaniards can get pretty dark actually. Some look like "typical" Latin Americans in skin complexion. It should not be forgotten that Southern Spain is not wholly European in culture. It was controlled roughly for 800 years by a swarthy and sometimes black people from North Africa known as the Moors.

Spain actually treats undocumented black African immigrants risking life and death to enter its country, arguably better then the U.S. treats Mexicans and especially Haitians doing the same. The U.S. has a long history of creating greater obstacles for immigrants of darker hues to enter this country then lighter hued immigrants. The early white Cubans were treated vastly different then the boat and raft loads of dirt poor black Haitians arriving in Florida.

Black Africans in Senegal attempting "illegally" to enter Spanish territories. A documentary. Journeyman Pictures: Out of Africa

QUOTE
Jan 2007
The 1,400 km voyage from Senegal to the Canary Islands is now the favoured way for illegal immigrants to enter Europe. But as many as 40% never make it.

Every day, an armada of tiny flotillas brave the 11 day journey from West Africa to the Canaries. "So far today, we've had 293 arrivals. Several needed medical attention for serious wounds", states Oswaldo Lemus from the Red Cross. Under Spanish law, these men can only be detained for 40 days. If their nationality cannot be established in that period, they are released into the local community. But authorities here are being stretched to breaking point and calls are growing for the immigration laws to be reviewed. "The Canary Islands are very small. It's not easy to absorb thousands of migrants", states Harbour Master Salvador Mendez. "People are really worried about the future. We don't know when it will stop". In Senegal, the dangers of the voyage don't appear to be putting people off. Everyone knows someone who did not make the crossing. "Here, young people have no future", complains Alkally Sarr. He's already survived the journey once, only to be deported. But he's vowed to; "try again. For as long as I live".

Dont know much about their history, but they tend to looks abit different from typical west europeans, they somehow looks a bit like Jew or middle-easter or something.

And based on my limited experience with less than a dozen spanish in Europe, I tend to think this is a group of very out-going people, they tend to very straightforward, and when they want to help somebody, they tend to be very helpful, unlike most of other people in the world (for instance, British tend to hide all their feelings in their mind, and may love to say the holiday words in front of others while may think completely the opposite in their mind, no bias against the british, such behaviors actually remind me of some of my Chinese frens).

I guess this very out-going characters is a double-edge sword, when some spanish happen to be haters, they may also tend to be very open about that, but that doesnt mean they are more of a hater than those guys who know how to hide their true feelings better.

Spain is a very racist country.

But it is also a very insignificant and weak country.
tangawizi
don't forget that Spanish folks have a complex about their moorish past... the women in their society up to the present day obsess over blond looks and blue eyes.. even though half the country look positively like their moorish counterparts.

also, historically, many northern europeans condescendingly despise the Spanish by saying that Africa begins at the Pyrenees.. almost as if to say their traits are not as refined as the northerners

there is a kinda racism in Spain against moors (present day northern african migrants) and eastern europeans (romans), so much so that their last government (aznar) instigated a migration policy of over 1 million south american latinos to settle in the country in order to keep the nation latinized, so there is a huge sense of "tribalism" going on there as folks seek to align themselves into different social stratas..

plus it's a nation crazy about football and so they are having to cope with some major social dynamics.. they produce great sportsmen, but they are hugely tribalistic (witness the ancient rivalry between Barca and Real Madrid)

big cities apart, the country is dotted with thousands of villages and most of the villagers are pretty provincial (a.k.a. ignorant bumpkins).. believe it or not!

anyways, much as there are racism in Spain, there are lots of people who have strong solidarity with the underdog and underprivileged...

Spain has one of the highest rates of adoption of babies from other countries... black babies are not common, but eastern european and strangely, chinese babies are very popular with the spanish from all over whether they are Basque or Andalucian..

i think the most racist elements in their society are probably those who hail from the villages perhaps

the bumpkin who hails from the village and is adjusting to big city life has the most reason to act racist.. he or she is still trying to fit in, and the only way he or she knows how is to despise others of another tribe and color...

You might be right about all of that, Tangawizi. I can't say I know a whole lot about the Spanish people, especially in contemporary Spain.

I had a professor that was Peruvian - born and raised in Peru - and he would fit the physical description of mestizo. He's visited Spain in the past, and according to him Northern Spain is pretty "white" and the music is much different then Southern Spain. If I remember correctly I think he stated people in Northern Spain have a traditional music that sounds Celtic like. Anyways, I remember he stated that when he traveled to Northern Spain the people were rather rude to him until they discovered he was from Latin America. Apparently Northern Spaniards do not like Southern Spaniards at all. I wonder if the animosity and antagonisms are as strong as those between Italians and Sicilians (or even between Northern Italians and Southern Italians)? SHOCKED.gif Them people can really go at each other! I mean just here in the U.S. the older Sicilian generation and older Italian generation dislike each other like U.S. Civil War between North and South. Well... maybe that's an exaggeration, but I know they can be at each others throats.

I remember one young Sicilian-American women told me that her friend's mother (Italian-American), once threw out of her house, when she was told she was Sicilian. rotflmao.gif

I suspect part of Spanish animosities toward North Africans or North African Moors has something to do with cultural frictions (including religious).

Nonetheless, traditions like the Flamenco dance in Southern Spain, to my understanding was heavily influenced by North African and or Moorish culture.

I had this one short chick in a class of mine semesters ago. I was certain this broad was Latina. But I talked to her one day after class and it turns out the broad is from Spain. Shocked the $hit out of me. I would've sworn that b*tch ate tacos.

Yeah, most people are pretty hazy on the difference between Mexicans & the Spanish. Given that at a glance, their culture seems to be quite similar, compounded by the fact that both speak Spanish.
