Roughly speaking there are two main camps: one camp grabs/blocks the opponents arm or wrist then attacks. The other camp avoids the opponents knife and arms completely and attacks openings. I personally think the complicated hand work needed to accomplish the former wold be unrealistic in a real knife fight. then again, all Filopino Knife fighting schools have real history of fights. So, any trained guys out there?

It depends on circumstances.
Sometimes you are fighting in close range vs long lange.
In close range (where you might not be able to step back) then you may be forced grab/block.
In long distance range by all means avoid and look for openings.
There are multitude of circumstances of course.

It's actually a very easy sport,I beleive that when practicing we should use armor or at least a protector like in fencing..

Millions of people world wide are victims of violent assaults. I practice martial arts partly for this reason. Filipino Knife fighting arts are Famous world over as being effective in real combat/street situations.

Knife fighting as a sport isn't as harsh as stick fighting. In our armed forces, they practice knife fighting using wooden knives with blunt points and smear the edge with lipstick. The winner will be the one who gets less lipstick marks on his body. Although hits are limited below the neck and above the knee, it can still be dangerous as the eye can hit the knife's point.

In stick fighting or arnis, people really just club each other out. icon_smile.gif

I think arnis training needs some improvement like adding a protection gear like what they do in kendo..

^^ Actually bro, they do. They have a special uniform, mostly colored red, that looks sort of like the kendo armor, only with a little more covering.

uhhh.. Its not exclusively Escrima they use.

Its combo of all the knife fighting techniques from many different cultures.

Apaches all the way down to Malay.

But if you had to brand it as one culture its mainly Apache.

Apache? Wow, I new they were warriors, but I didn't know they had a system for knife fighting. Is it comparable to the Filipino system?
