Full Version: Japanese Scientists Create Glow-In-The Dark Monkeys

While I was eating dinner the news reporter blurted out "Japanese scientists have created glow-in-the dark monkeys", and I nearly choked on my food from laughing.

But it was no joke.
From what I gather, the glowing monkeys are part of the research into genetic cures for diseases like Parkinsons, Alzheimers, cancer, etc...
The way I understand it, the successful implantation of flourescent genes into these monkeys gives hope to the future implantation of disease fighting genetic material into Humans.

this isn't that new. I don't know whether they were Japanese or not but a group of scientiest have done this with mice as well.

Look at the source: It's from 2006

First, if it saves my life, I don't mind glowing in the dark.

Second, does this mean we are close to that Jurassic Park thing? that would be cool!

Imagine going to a nightclub and having your skin glow under the UV lights. laugh.gif
But I don't think the intention of doctors is to make you glow like the radioactive kid.
This was only a test done with a simple marker to see if the implantation technique works.

The possibilities of this kind of research are both cool and dangerous.
I guess the significance of success with primates is that they are genetically closer to us than mice.
It seems that if the genetic techniques work on monkeys, they are also more likely to work on Humans.
This raises the possibility of improving the lives of people suffering from degenerative diseases.
It also raises the fears that Human genetic modification will create social problems and as yet unknown medical conditions.
