MANILA, Philippines—Senator Richard J. Gordon wants to add a ninth ray to the sun in the Philippine flag to symbolize the Muslims who fought against foreign invaders.

“Our national flag not only represents principles of sovereignty and solidarity of the Philippine nation, but also embodies the ideals and traditions of the Filipino people developed over the course of national history,” he said in a statement.

Gordon said the Philippine flag symbolizes the nation’s struggle for independence and victory against foreign colonizers.

The three stars in the flag represent the three major geographical divisions of the country: Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao; while the eight rays of the sun represent the eight provinces that revolted against the Spanish regime: Batangas, Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna, Manila, Nueva Ecija, Pampanga, and Tarlac.

Gordon said that behind the stories of the most celebrated names of national heroes who fought for our independence lie the stories of our mostly-forgotten Muslim heroes, including Lapu-Lapu, Sultan Kudarat, and Rajah Sulayman, who displayed courage and integrity.

The senator explained that this is the reason he proposed to add a ninth ray to the sun in the Philippine flag—to acknowledge the courage and integrity of Muslim Filipinos who fought for the nation’s independence.

“Our Muslim heroes left an imprint on national history that, at the very least, must be given due recognition in the most heraldic item of national importance—the Philippine flag,” he said.

Gordon authored Senate Bill 2590, which proposes that the rays of the sun on the Philippine flag be increased from eight to nine, to symbolize the community of Muslim leaders who defended the country from foreign invasion.

“By adding a ninth ray in the sun to represent our Muslim brothers, I think we make ourselves one with them. They are the Filipinos who were very successful in thwarting colonialism in our country,” Gordon said.

Or maybe a moon (Islamic symbol) placed somewhere on the flag. This might unite the Muslim secessionist with the rest of the country. beerchug.gif

Now we have the whole family: the father, the mother and the children - the sun, the moon, and the stars respectively.

from a BLOG site:http://toplatsi.blogspot.com/2009/02/9th-r...ppine-flag.html

Senator Richard Gordon, reportedly, proposed the inclusion of an additional ray in the rays of the sun in the Philippine flag.

The 9th ray, he claimed, will represent the Mindanao folks who among the first Filipinos fought Spaniards, aside from the eight provinces we known 'til today.

But did you know that it's Lanao del Sur representative Sultan Omar Dianalan who first gave this idea of having a 9th ray?

He actually filed a bill for this during 1970s.

Debate heated up because some argued that Mindanao has represented already by one of the three stars in our flag.

Through the years, there were others tried to proposed new insertions in our flag.

Some insists for the inclusion of a crescent to symbolize Moslems in the Philippines.

There are even others questioned the shade of blue in the flag... should it be China blue, sky blue, azure, navy blue or dark blue?

According to an article which I've obtained from the National Historical Institute's website, as of the opinion of the daughter of Marcela Agoncillo, one of the flag-makers, is concerned... if there's really an error in the color of the flag, why did Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo [who made the sketch of the flag] never question it?

1985 when then President Ferdinand Marcos created an executive order stating that the shade of the color blue in the flag should be lighter than navy blue BUT DARKER than sky blue or azure.

True enough, there are numerous controversies hound RP flag!

The Flag Law of 1907 which was enacted during the takeover of the Americans in the Philippines, prompted the Filipinos not to use a flag and even display it inside their homes!

The said law was made amid the so-called mutual distrust among Pinoys and American rulers... not until October 1919, the Flag Law of 1907 was repealed, as approved and signed by Governor General Francis Harrison.

Even these days, many of us puzzled about the look and whereabouts of the original Philippine flag sewn in Hong Kong and delivered here in the country in 1898.

The original flag, allegedly, was lost somewhere in Tayug, Pangasinan.
But others believe that the flag is the one placed in the Aguinaldo Museum in Baguio City while some says the Americans have it.

Fine, fine, fine... should we really waste our time on this kind of debate?

Maybe... at least. Just we hope, some of these issues will be resolved sooner.

Besides, it's our flag.

The flag symbolizes our identity to this world, shows our love to our very own fatherland. 'Ika nga ng isa nating dating lider, wala nang tutulong sa Pilipino kundi kapwa-Pilipino. Well, it should be, wala nang magmamalasakit at magmamahal sa Pilipinas kundi tayong mga Pilipino lang.

Just got reminded, mark your calendar-- it's every 28th of May we should enjoined ourselves in displaying the Philippine flag in our homes, offices and establishments!

Let us show that we are proud to be Pinoy!

Gordon: 9th ray in flag’s sun to represent Muslims
SENATOR Richard J. Gordon (Ind.) has reiterated his proposal to add a ninth ray to the sun in the Philippine flag, which would symbolize the Muslims who fought against foreign invaders, as the nation celebrates National Flag Day on May 28.

“Our national flag not only represents principles of sovereignty and solidarity of the Philippine nation, but also embodies the ideals and traditions of the Filipino people developed over the course of national history,” he said.

Gordon said the Philippine flag symbolizes the nation’s struggle for independence and victory against foreign colonizers.

The three stars in the flag represent the three major geographical divisions of the country: Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao; while the eight rays of the sun represent the eight provinces that revolted against the Spanish regime, namely: Batangas, Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna, Manila, Nueva Ecija, Pampanga, and Tarlac.

Gordon said that behind the stories of the most celebrated names of national heroes, who fought for our independence, lie the stories of our mostly-forgotten Muslim heroes, including Lapu-Lapu, Sultan Kudarat and Rajah Sulayman, who displayed courage, bravery and integrity.

The senator explained that it is for this reason that he proposed to add a ninth ray to the sun in the Philippine flag to acknowledge the courage, bravery and integrity of Muslim Filipinos who fought for the nation’s independence..

“With their courage, bravery and integrity, our Muslim heroes left an imprint on national history that, at the very least, must be given due recognition in the most heraldic item of national importance -- the Philippine flag,” he said.

Gordon authored Senate Bill 2590, which proposes that the rays of the sun on the Philippine flag be increased from eight to nine, to symbolize the community of Muslim leaders who defended the country from foreign invasion.

He said that it is important to recognize the efforts and contributions of the Filipino Muslims in the country’s history so that they would not feel marginalized and Filipinos would be united regardless of creed.

“By adding a ninth ray in the sun to represent our Muslim brothers, I think we make ourselves one with them. They are the Filipinos who were very successful in thwarting colonialism in our country,” Gordon said.

I have some more on the Philippine flag. I remember reading quite a few years back about plans to change the national flag. The first was the addition of a golden crescent to the left of the sun in the centre of the white triangle. I cannot find actual articles on this proposal but here is an Asiaweek reader's reaction on former president Fidel Ramos' implication that the crescent symbolizes Islam just like in the Malaysian and Singaporean flags: http://www.asiaweek.com/asiaweek/95/0714/letters.html. I don't know how deeply this issue was considered by lawmakers but this proposal was definitely made to appease the Muslim minority in the country.

The second is the addition of another ray in the sun, which is already mentioned in the FOTW site. I made a rendition of the flag.

According to Gilbert Felongco, "Gulf News", 18 February 2009, the independent Senator Richard Gordon proposed [again] on 17 February 2009 to add a ninth ray to the sun featured on the national flag of Philippines. While the eight rays of the sun represent the eight original provinces that rose against the Spanish colonial rule, the ninth ray would "Filipino Muslims' contribution to national freedom" and "acknowledge the bravery of Muslim Filipinos".

There should be another Ray for the Indianized Empire who fought the Muslim Invaders so it should be 10 rays.

The flag of Magdalo is really cool though an all red background flag is associated with communism (Vietnam, China). Our flag looks very simple, a flag like that of the Magdalo, something constructive and unique would be nice. Btw, i'm not trying to disrespect our national flag, just an opinion.
