Hey Ronald ! How's it going mate ? Looks like a feast of fine films. I can't wait beerchug.gif
I called Suci Kennita regarding the chance of seeing Laskar Pelangi screened in Melbourne again, but I guess the chances are slim.
I missed out on seeing it in April. icon_redface.gif
Anyway I hope Miles submitted it for the Melbourne International Film Festival.

BTW We got to talk about two films I want to enter into next year's programme - Mengejar Ombak and Jalanan.

Ralf
Hi Moviemania. Please introduce yourself, so we can know a little bit about you.
Do you work in the film industry ?
rwicaksana
Hi Ralf,

I don't think MIFF 2009 will screen Laskar Pelangi (Rainbow Troops).

Yes, please submit the films after the Festival 2009 closes.

9 feature films genres ranging from drama, comedy, horror to historical epic will be screened during the week, and to add the flavour of the festival, 6 short independent movies will also be shown. The Indonesian Film Festival 2009 will ensure the satisfaction of each of your taste buds.

To give you a clearer picture of our gourmet delicacy, the Festival is proud to say that it has successfully locked in some exceptional feature films that has never been shown in Indonesia before, in which one of them is regarded as highly controversial, and has been banned from public screening since its final production on 1990 - award winning documentary KANTATA TAKWA. The opening film premier - MACABRE & closing film premier cin(T)a will not be released until October 2009 in Indonesia.

Check out our facebook, http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=9732...gid=97320061286 - to get the full updates.

I don't think MIFF 2009 will screen Laskar Pelangi (Rainbow Troops).
It's disappointing that the Melbourne International FIlm Festival seems unlikely to screen a film that has had such a big impact.

Maybe I will get my chance to see Laskar Pelangi on a big screen in Melbourne after all.
I am still fuming that I missed out on the April 25 premiere.

Quite a scoop that the Melbourne Indonesian Film Festival will screen films here in Melbourne long before their homeland premiere. beerchug.gif

I thought that this documentary which criticised the New Order regime was already screened in Indonesia.
I read on the Asia Pacific Screen Awards website and the Jakarta Post that Kantata Takwa was screened at Blitz Megaplex cinemas in Jakarta for one whole month in 2008.

You can stay at my place and probably meet Dewi & friends (not sure yet about her schedule).

I don't have any concrete information yet, but I have a feeling that PPIA will bring CIN(T)A to Perth.
I hope this time around they will be able to reply to email enquiries about screening information. icon_wink.gif

icon_sad.gif Can I get in if I wear my old highschool jumper ?
Really Laskar Pelangi needs a lot more media exposure.
It needs to get back on the big screen, with a distributor in Oz, and a season at all the progressive cinemas, like the Nova, the Astor, the Kino, the George, the majors like Hoyts, GU B&C, Readings and Village with its wanky named "Cinema Europa" venues - and then everyone will begin to understand that there is such a thing as Indonesian movies.
Apart from Indonesian students, the general population has never heard of such a thing as Indonesian Cinema.
I told my boss I was lobbying Australian distributors to bring Indonesian movies out here, and his response was that he did not know Indonesian people had the facilities to make movies.
Indonesia is the closest Asian neighbour to Australia, but cultural knowledge of each other is in the Dark Ages.
Australian companies should not fear making a loss on distribution. With simple and clear marketing, the message would get across, and if the very best Indonesian films were given commercial releases, they would certainly make a profit.

^^ Hey Ralf, your interest in Indo pop culture is certailny very commendable
you should get some kind of recognition from like Indo Consulate there for promoting Indo cultural awareness in Australia
u remind me also of these bule Australians I saw on Indo TV shows who share your great passion for Indo culture
one is a Dalang (wayang puppeteer) the other was a TV host and there is
also one pretty lady who is an accomplished Sinden (Javanese classical singer) and she belted out a perfect melody in high Javanese.
I am not sure if she is Austalian or maybe American tho .
Keep up the good vibes mate. beerchug.gif

Ralf
Perhaps people would re-assess my efforts if they knew the reason why I missed out on the hugely important Laskar Pelangi premiere.
I was staying at my parents' house close to the coast and going surfing everyday for one whole week, and I totally neglected to check screening info during this surfari.
Anyway I was expecting someone (and you know who you are) to call me with the screening details.

*I called and reserved my tickets, just so I don't miss out while I am away in Sydney.

Hi Suci
Thanks for writing an update on the Indonesian Film Festival, but Ronald already made this topic and posted all the information here : http://www.asiafinest.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=206267

We should ask our moderators, such as Purple (I see Dante is online but I can't send another PM due to current forum restrictions), to combine the two topics, or delete this one and post your update in Ronald's existing topic.
No hard feelings I hope.

Mira Lesmana and Nicholas Saputra came as special guests for the Melbourne 2007 Indonesian Film Festival.
There were a couple of media appearances as well as a public forum to discuss contemporary Asian Cinema, held at Melbourne University.

Left to right, Ronald Wicaksana (the original poster of this thread and current director of the film festival), Nani Pollard, David Hannan (the man who correctly re-subtitled Ada Apa Dengan Cinta and brought about the limited "educational" release of many Indonesian DVDs through Monash University in Australia), Arsisto Ambyo.

Hi Ralf,

This year, we are going to organize similar events in conjunction with the Asia Week (Asia Institute, The University of Melbourne), the event will be called ;

'In Conversation with The Mo Brothers' and additional free screening for the 'Winners of Short Film Competition IFF2009' - both events will take place at The University of Melbourne on the 17th August 2009 (Monday) and it is open for public.

I will keep you updated, when the official program is released sometimes next week.

cheers,
ronald

This is the first time we got the festival this big (before it was basically just a one day event) so bear with us while we raise the stakes.
Note that last year's Melbourne International Film Festival opener was Mark Hartley's celebration of colourful and exuberantly trashy Cinema with Not Quite Hollywood.
So why not celebrate some low-brow Indonesian movies ?

BTW I have not seen Janda Kembang, but I will spread all the gossip when it hits the big screen. icon_wink.gif
rwicaksana
@Furansizuka- Every single films that will be screened at the 4th Indonesian Film Festival (11-20 August) has gone through a very tight selection from the current Indonesian film industry from different genres by our Panels.

@Ralf- Indonesia Pusaka ticket concert is ready. I will ask the ticketing department to post it to you tomorrow morning.

Do you know, how can I post some pictures in this forum?

Thank you.

Ralf
I use Photobucket to host my pictures.
I upload the image to Photobucket and then copy the "image code" and paste it directly into my reply here in our forum.

Yeah, we want to see a few pix from this year's festival.

@ Ronald, thanks for the Indonesian concert tickets.
I guess I will post pix from that event in our "Traditional Indonesian Dances & Music & associated Cultural stuff" topic.
Ralf
Later in this year there will be a general cultural festival in Melbourne called "Festival Indonesia".
This event has been running annually for the past four years and I was very surprised to read on their website that this year's festival will feature one whole week of Indonesian movies to be screened at a major commercial cinema complex. yahoo.gif

Then I suddenly wondered if the public would be confused..... we got our Indonesian film festival..... then another Indonesian film festival.....
Ha ha laugh.gif one thing is for sure.
The Australian public will notice that there is such a thing as Indonesian Cinema.

Indonesian Silver Screen
As part of Festival Indonesia in Melbourne.
A week long screening of Indonesian films featuring old classics and new releases.

Date : 3-9 October 2009
Time : Various
Venue: Hoyts Cinemas, Melbourne Central
Entrance: TBC

Obviously the details are still to be confirmed, but I will post them in our Indonesian Movies topic as they come to hand.

@ RWicaksana : Did you figure out how to post pictures in our forum ?

Film Screenings Update : Due to popular demand Cin(T)a will be showing twice.
The 8:00pm Sunday 16 August screening of the Mo Brothers' horror movie Macabre will be replaced with Cin(T)a.
Therefore Cin(T)a will screen as closing film of the fest, and also a couple of days earlier at 8:00pm on Sunday 16/8/09.
Macabre will now screen only once, as the opening night film on Friday 14 August at 8:00pm.
(I always thought it was strange to call Macabre the "opening night film" , because Laskar Pelangi has been screening to students for the past three days.)
Ralf
Given that it was the official opening night, I was very disappointed with the rather small audience.

Just came home from the Macabre screening. eek.gif jawdrop.gif
This one punches hard into the gory slasher genre.
No desire to being "arty" like last year's Fiksi, this is audacious exploitation genre at its bloody best.
Fans of slasher shock movies, Texas Chainsaw Massacre type films, or Tarantino Kill Bill sword hacking violence, will dig this debut feature from the Mo Brothers.
Although it is not as heavy and sick as the French new wave of torture porn like Martyrs, I still felt uncomfortable and squeamish watching this most explicitly bloody Indonesian film ever made.
While this was perhaps not quite my cup of tea, I had a good chat with Timothy Tjahjanto and Kimo Stamboel (the Mo Brothers) and look forward to catching up with them again for an official film discussion at Melbourne University on Monday at 5:00pm.
I am interested to see how this film will influence the course of Indonesian Cinema.
Has anybody else seen Macabre ?
Pick up on the reference to Fruit Chan's film called Dumplings ?

Note : The character of Dara also features in Takut Faces of Fear.

Here is a picture of the IFF crew from the Sunday night screening.

@ rwicaksana : Sorry my brain was totally out of function owned.gif ..... we should have invited RRR and PBS radio as well as Madman Entertainment to see the festival.
In particular they may be able to find a market for international sales of genre films like Macabre and Takut.
I feel uncomfortable about "Asian Cinema" being over-represented by way out genre films, rather than a balance of all the great films that are rarely seen outside of their home countries, but any kind of publicity is good for raising awareness of Indonesian Cinema, and these two horror films are the best to come out of "The Thousand Islands" that I have ever seen.
Can we get some more media into the closing night ?

Just now I got home from seeing a bunch of films, including Drupadi and Cin(T)a.
Both of these are great.
Riri Riza's short film Drupadi is very stylised, like wayang kulit, but full of bloody hellfire and majesty.

Cin(T)a is almost a "short film", running at only 1hr 12min, but that helps it to stay focused on its main theme, rather than straying into typical romantic melodrama.
It was really a pleasure to watch. The characters are engaging, without being too familiar, and the screenplay is full of life and the dialogue is sparkling.
The theme may have been covered on both the big and small screens many times, but the treatment here is unique within Indonesia, and more like the style of 1960s French New Wave Cinema.
The leading lady even reminds me of Goddard's Anna Karina.

Big disappointments of the festival have been Kambing Jantan and Janda Kembang.
Raditya Dika lands in maudlin territory, with the ups and downs of the long distance relationship becoming repetitive and tedious. The film version does not work and it is way too long for the content.
The Luna Maya vehicle Janda Kembang has a few bright sparks like the Rudy/Dika collaboration, but the manic forced comedy of the leading males just doesn't cut it.
Janda Kembang is Giuseppe Tornatore's Malèna transferred to the Indonesian kampungs, but all the sincerity, sophistication and layers of meaning have been stripped away and replaced with about two hours of dumb jokes, stereotypes and dopey melodrama.
furansizuka
Well, Kambing Jantan and Janda Kembang were not supposed to be on this festival in the first place!
Macabre and Cin(T)a deserves more exposure.
Ralf
Well I had expected more from Kambing Jantan, because the main man is a writer.
A good writer is an integral part of most film projects.

We can write more extensively about the films in our Indonesian Movies topic, and I will certainly assemble a bunch of opinions and reviews there, but we will use this current thread to just write briefly and concentrate on the IFF event itself and news and associated Q&A sessions with the film makers.

As mentioned above, Festival Indonesia Inc is running its own week-long film fest in October at a major commercial cinema, which could be a bonus (and hopefully not the death knell for our own IFF events) but I still have not been able to find out what our competitor's programme consists of.

Arsisto Ambyo reminded me that I had completely neglected to mention the teen girl comedy Queen Bee.
This film says all the commendable things.... anti corruption, helping the rakyat, progressive idealism, practical solutions, fostering creativity.... all done within the format of a teen movie,
which makes its aims similar to that other very progressive teen movie Ada Apa Dengan Cinta?, but unlike AADC? this Queen Bee film lacks the sophistication of the Miles Films effort.
The girl and guy leads come across as very one-dimensional and can't carry the movie, while Jajang C. Noer brings her usual warmth and strength to the role of the pembantu.
Despite commendable aims and high technical production values, this film is not particularly memorable.

Kantata Takwa seems like Indonesia's Woodstock. rockon.gif
Originating with a concert that spoke of freedom from an oppressive and corrupt regime, the film combines archival concert footage from 1990 and the police crackdown, together with stylised portrayals of a totalitarian Indonesian state.
If you think "Woodstock" with more political fire and a religious philosphy that nurtures love and freedom, then you got the picture.
One thing is for sure, Iwan Fals could rock the house and ignite protests to put fear into the corrupt hearts of government leeches.
"If love is thrown away, Don't hope that justice will have its day."
YouTube video of that song.

Also saw Drupadi again. icon_smile.gif
I wonder how this project could have turned out if Miles Films had an epic budget.

After tonight's screening I may have bitten off more than I can chew with David Hanan, and then roped Arsisto and Ghian into coming with me to BlokM Express for dinner and a yack about Indonesian movies.

Update : After shooting my mouth off to David and everyone else about how I was going to "help" icon_redface.gif , now it seems with everyone pushing in the same direction, we may soon get commercial DVD releases of Indonesian movies in Australia.
Together with Farah Azalea, we gave David Hanan's business card (he does DVDs) to Sammaria Simanjuntak, so Cin(T)a and Macabre look set to do big things for Indonesian Cinema abroad.
