MR's are the only affordable way the average joe is going to experience driving a mid-engine vehicle. If your're going to buy one, your best bet is to buy one thats already fixed up with JDM rear taillights and everything. This will save you the headache of weeks and months of searching for kouki tail lights on ebay hehe. The fixed up for sale MR2s are abundant on craigslist especially in LA and OC sections. I hear the 2.0 turbo engines are pretty bullet proof and can last up to 300k miles with the proper maintenance.

MR2s are nice. I had one of the earliest 1985.
A few things to know before you buy one.
They are cramped. Its hard to drive in them long distances or to sit in them and wait a long time. Also, where to put stuff?
Mid-engine doesn't mean superior handling. It does mean good handling and grip. but pushed beyond her performance limit, MR2s go out of control compare this to say a 240 where grip is lost gradually better control.
A bang of a mid-engine car is a Porsche 914. It was called the poor mans Porche but a Porsche non the less. A 2 seats targa top mid engine air cooled flat 4 built in the 70s. No emission test required! People put turbo chargers and get 200~300 HP on a 1500 LB car. That ain't bad. I drove my friends, I'd say it way out performed my MR2. (my MR2 wasn't customised and non turbo - his 914 had turbo but was otherwise stock )

I use to want one of these cars so bad back in hs. It'd be too impractical for me now. It's just too small for me and that coming from someone who has a 240SX.

hence my camry with the 5s (same block on the N/A MR2 and Celica) didn't even last that long, at least it made it to the 200K something
