Medvedev makes sales pitch for Russian warplane

MOSCOW, June 15 (RIA Novosti) - Russia would like to expand sales of such warplanes as the Su-34 throughout the world, President Dmitry Medvedev said in an interview with Chinese TV released on Monday.

Sukhoi Su-34 Fullback, an advanced two-seat fighter-bomber and attack aircraft, was flown by Medvedev in March.

The president told China Central TV his flight was supposed to "deliver several messages."

He said he wanted to "learn firsthand about the potential of Russian equipment," and was able to see for himself that "this equipment is really great."

He added that as commander in chief, he wanted to share firsthand experience with "people serving in the Armed Forces," including the "strain and other challenges."

Medvedev said Russia was "interested in expanding the geographic base" for the export of these aircraft "to include our neighbors, as well as other countries."

The Su-34 is armed with a 30mm GSh-301 gun and 180 rounds of ammunition and can fire up to 1,500 rounds a minute.

The aircraft can carry an array of missiles, including air-to-air, air-to-surface, anti-ship and heat-seeking missiles, and guided and unguided bombs.

Full-scale production began in January 2008, and 24 Su-34 aircraft are expected to be in service by 2010. In January 2008, the Russian Air Force said it would procure 70 aircraft by 2015.

Experts say the new bomber has the potential to become the top plane in its class for years to come.

China should buy some. An awesome platform to use against ships.
sinraptor
It would go great in an aircraft carrier as well since the naval version has a powerful anti-submarine radar. Its all in the matter of if China can iron out some isues with Russia
TomAsia
It might be a great aircraft, however, it would still be better for China to develop its fighters/bombers.

Whatever China buys from Russia, it must get tech-transfers too.

China is developing its own tech(J-XX). However, just like the carrier; I'll believe it when I see it in real life and not just some fan boy photoshop rendering.

Buying Russian hardware for now is the way to go IMO. Just enough so that PLAAF won't be lagging behind India.

sinraptor
whats really neat about this aircraft is that it has its own washroom and mini fridge.
Eidolon
Buying them would really be more of a gesture of goodwill towards Russia than a strategic necessity. Tech transfer or not, the Chinese military industrial complex has always reverse engineered foreign technology, to the extent that the Russians probably realize that if they're going to pitch the sale of this plane to China the Chinese will eventually learn how to build it themselves. Thus, they're probably not selling us bleeding edge technology, though I'm sure the Su-34 is still very competent. All in all, I think China needs a better indigenous R&D platform, but making a purchase from Russia might help bilateral relations.
sinraptor
although i would much rather see China build their own jets, although the J-10 is a goodstart, I don't really see that China making their aircraft at a competent level until at least 2015. Some interim measures such as Su-34, Su-35 are necessary to act as catalyst.
antimatter
There's not much SU-34 can do the JH-7A couldn't do. China would pass the SU-34.
Actually, SU-30MK2 can do alot of the SU-34 dutties too. It's too redundant.
sinraptor
China also has this which is suppose to be simular to late F-18

seems kind of unnecessary to me

Fullback? ugly name
looks uglier than a Su-27 as well
I've always adored how Su-27s Flankers looked.

Even in japanese anime, if you haven't noticed, lots of their drawings of fighter jets are based on the Su-27 Flanker
in japanese anime
3 planes are featured the most - Su-27 Flanker, F-15 Eagle + MiG 35

they are the most beautifully designed jets ever

I was curious about the chinese fighter shown on CCTV7. never seen or heard it before

the fullback has no chance of selling to china. Medvedev is just building hype for the other customers. some idiot in India is going to think, if Chinese are considering this I better buy quick! laugh.gif
sinraptor
That the supoosed j-13 carrier borne aircraft
airtorp3do
J-13 is an old project that got canceled.

what did the CCTV segment say about this plane?
TomAsia
China is doing very good with its indigenous J-10 program and it is already producing an upgraded prototype, J10-B. However, there are many parts in air fighter building that are still not advance as Russia and many western counter parts. The more tech-transfer China can get from Russia the faster China can catch up to world leaders in this field. In the end, China can't and shouldn't totally depends on other countries for its defense and tech-transfer combines with indigenous defense program is the way to go now.

Fullback is what NATO calls it.

Its not about the looks. Its about the performance and function.
