I read an article about the Punisher movie for a Filipino newspaper, and for some reason, they talk quite a bit about the lead character's use of a balisong (aka a butterfly knife), even though it only briefly used. I almost got the impression that balisongs seem to be a cultural weapon, like the katana for the Japanese.
Are they that big of a deal, or was that article simply focusing too much on it? I am interested in this because I am writing a horror script where the bad guy uses a balisong, and halfway through he seemingly dies, but later, when stalking the characters in the woods, they at first only hear the whoosh whoosh click of him spinning the knife as he stalks them. He uses it a lot (mostly just spinning it, as he has to chase the characters a lot before he finally gets to kill at least one of them), a lot more than the Punisher did, so I was curious.

the writer of that webpage has it all wrong. There's no such city as 'Balisong' and a barrio is not a city.. a barrio is sort of a small area or part of about 50 families in a Barangay(in which case, a barangay can be synonymous to a borough in New York City). So it's basically a small neighborhood and not a city.

i don't know but it's martial art, i mean most pi martial consist of deadly weapon oriented martial arts like arnis, i mean filpino culture is the culture that actually used yoyos to kill people.
it comes in big and small sizes, it's like pepper spray in phils. some people feel naked traveling without one.
