Let’s face it: Even now that she (has just turned) 80, former First Lady Imelda Marcos is a box-office draw, a hot media item and a hit anywhere she goes, whatever she does. She’s a newsmaker for all seasons, for all reasons, a Steel Butterfly whose wings continue to flutter-flutter.

Even New York just can’t seem to have enough of The Madame.

Listen to this report from Funfare’s Big Apple correspondent Edmund Silvestre (of The Filipino Reporter):

An off-Broadway production about the “ambitious” and “controversial” former Philippine First Lady will be staged this fall at The Julia Miles Theater on 55th Street in Manhattan on a limited engagement, from Sept. 22 to Oct. 18.

Pan Asian Repertory Theatre will present Imelda A New Musical that has a book by Sachi Oyama, music by Nathan Wang and lyrics by Aaron Coleman. East West Players producing artistic director Tim Dang, who staged the 2005 Los Angeles world premiere of the musical, will direct, with choreography by Reggie Lee.

Broadway actress Jaygee Macapugay will play the title role, with Liz Casasola as Corazon Aquino, Mel Sagrado Maghuyop as Ferdinand Marcos, and Brian Jose as Ninoy Aquino.

The cast also includes Alan Ariano, Angelica-Lee Aspiras, Billy Bustamante, Leanne Cabrera, Sacha Iskra, Loresa Lanceta, Jonelle Margallo, and Romney Piamonte.

The creative team is headed by Kaori Akazawa (set), Victor En Yu Tan (lighting), Ivy Chou (costumes), and Leslie Espinosa (hair and make-up).

Tisa Chang, artistic producing director of Pan Asian Repertory Theatre, said Imelda, which will be New York theater’s first Filipino-themed musical, spans the 1940s to 1980s, the pivotal years after the Philippines gained its independence. “Imelda Marcos wanted to set her country as an equal player on the world stage and gain the respect of the world,” Chang said.

Noted Fil-Am community leader Vivian Velasco said Imelda will give Filipino tourists another reason to see the Big Apple.

Fat Boy Slim plans Imelda Album

QUOTE
BYRNE AND FATBOY SLIM WRITE IMELDA MARCOS TRIBUTE ALBUM

Rocker DAVID BYRNE and DJ FATBOY SLIM are collaborating on a new album, inspired by flamboyant former Philippines first lady IMELDA MARCOS.
Byrne reveals the LP will be a "disco musical" about the early life of the 79-year-old, the widow of dictator Ferdinand Marcos, who died in 1989.
Byrne tells Interview magazine, "I did research and discovered there was this story not just about her, but about the woman who raised her - their parallel lives, and how they became estranged.
"Imelda spent a lot of time in New York, going to clubs. She converted a floor of her New York townhouse into a kind of a club with a mirror ball and everything."

QUOTE
DJ Fatboy Slim and Talking Heads singer David Byrne are writing a musical about former Philippine first lady Imelda Marcos, to be shown next March.

Here Lies Love will examine Mrs Marcos' passion for music and night clubs.

Billed as "a timeless story with more contemporary resonances than are comfortable", it will premiere at Australia's Adelaide Festival.

Mrs Marcos was found guilty of corruption in the mid-1990s, but her conviction was overturned on appeal.

The charges were part of a wider case alleging that Mrs Marcos and her husband, former President Ferdinand Marcos, plundered the nation's economy between 1968 and 1986.

The pair were overthrown in a popular revolt in 1986 and fled to Hawaii, where Ferdinand Marcos died three years later.

She was not amused

QUOTE
Slim - real name Norman Cook - claimed "Here Lies Love," taken from the epitaph Marcos has written for herself, will be a "satirical, witty and thought-provoking exploration into the mind of an international jet-setter, alleged victim and grieving widow (of former Philippines leader Ferdinand Marcos)."

But Marcos - famous for her extravagant lifestyle and vast shoe collection - is furious. She says, "This British musician, this Fatboy Slim. I would prefer him not to make a musical of my life - but there is nothing I can do. I would rather do it myself. Show the people the real me, the real Imelda."

There's no such thing.

Is she willing to lay her life for the country? You're still confused Suzuka.

Ninoy and Rizal died for the country. Focus your attention on these two, period.
