reminds me of rumania montevideo. Girl with the drum.
That band went under my radar. never hard of them so I checked them out on yuotube. From the hair style and fonts used, I'm guessing mid 90s?
Jpop in the 80s was special. Older singers and styles were still around like Ishikawa Hitomi and Sawada Kenji. They were competing with the reigning singers like Matsuda Seiko and Nakamori Akina. And newer styles were coming in like Anzen Chitai, The Tube, checkers, Koizumi Kyoko. And there were groups that were popular but never appeared on TV like Southern All Stars and Niagara Triangle. Too bad I don't have any music videos of that stuff - I only got mp3s.
The 90s was the beginning of change I believe. The studios and labels started losing control and bands like The Brilliant Green, ELT, Do As Infinity and Utada Hikaru started at this time.
Now, during 00s, Jpop has really matured. A few musicians like Morining Musume are still studio controlled, but the vast majority are Independent entities under contract. Its really amazing the level of talent that appeared seemingly from nowhere. Just four years ago, I read a Japanese article predicting Jpop will crash because there was nobody talented enough to replace peope like Utada Hikaru and Hamasaki Ayumi as they retire. That article was so totally off! The new talent is way better than the older ones.
