Taiwan town, fearing toxins, refuses China typhoon aid

TAIPEI, Aug 19 (Reuters) - A Taiwan town where 700 people were displaced after the island's worst typhoon in 50 years has declined mobile homes from political rival China, fearing the they might contain toxic chemicals, officials said on Wednesday.

Chiatung Township refused 100 quick-assembly homes after Taiwan's notoriously anti-China county of Pingtung said that based on news reports in China, they might contain formalin, a chemical that can be hazardous in high doses, deputy county magistrate Chung Chia-pin said.

"Although the homes are a humanitarian donation, we need to consider safety first," Chung said. "Also, not just China, but other countries are also offering these donations."

The homes, which reached Taiwan on Tuesday, should be tested for any contamination, said township chief Lai Hsieh-ho.

China said the homes had already been checked.

"These mobile homes are strictly produced according to Taiwan's design requirements and technical standards by the mainland's top producers," Fan Liqing, spokeswoman for China's Taiwan Affairs Office, told a news conference.

Typhoon Morakot hit Taiwan on Aug. 8, killing an estimated 500 people in massive landslides. The government has come under fire for its slow response to the disaster and for initially refusing offers of foreign aid. [nTP202685]

China has claimed sovereignty over self-ruled Taiwan since 1949, when Mao Zedong's Communists won the Chinese civil war and Chiang Kai-shek's Nationalists fled to the island. Beijing has vowed to bring Taiwan under its rule, by force if necessary.

But with ties warming since 2008, China has offered typhoon relief including 1,000 mobile homes, 10,000 sleeping bags and 10,000 blankets as well as about 176 million yuan ($26 million).

Taiwan residents' distrust of Chinese goods shot up last year when dairy products by several firms in China were found to be contaminated with melamine, killing at least six babies and making tens of thousands sick.

Formalin aggravates asthma and causes breathing trouble. I think the FEMA of the U.S. was sued after mobile homes had formalin after Katrina in 2005.

I found this message circulating in Taiwanese emails.

Dear friends and friends of Taiwan . the present authority of Taiwan is an unlawful ruling regime which establishing itself based on a unlawful so called"constitution" without the will of Taiwanese people. By modern politics of democracy doctrine and common international custom, this constitution of KMT is simply just a kmt party internal constitution which has never been approved by the ruled. Ma in-jiue knows that clearly that is also why he himself also look down that piece of antique scratch paper. Poor people vote for him to serve following that antiquity ,however he enjoy the power but denying the sovereign status of Taiwan by calling the island nation a DISTRICT. The "president " put himself at a ODD position. He is everything and nothing that makes him responsible for nothing. That's why the Auguest 8 natural disaster has nothing to do with him. The traitor and little bastard. He is looking up his China communism big boss to authorize him how response to rescue the hundreds of thousands victimes. How do we go to do with this super-incapable national leader? IMPEACH him. Have a good day

台灣平民政府090818聲明

Taiwan Civil Government Announcement:

Aug. 18, 2009

Is it true?

How can they reject homes based on an unfounded fear?

Have they actually checked the homes?

So they reject these much needed emergency homes to alleviate humanitarian sufferings just so that they can fulfill their anti-China fetish?

How more irresponsible some people can get.

Even in these times of great tumult, some people just cant resist their deep-seated psychological problems and choose to sacrifice innocent victims.

WTF.

I think the mobile homes are currently being checked, PRC has claimed that it's the best quality mobile home built to Taiwan's legal specifications from their best factories and they've already checked for contaminants.

It's only 1 county that has denied it so..

eventhough this is a little bit rediculous, if ML set up more strict quality controls and eliminate events like toxins in products then these TD'ers won't even have any excuses. ML still has a way to go!

Isn't there news about toxic prefabricated house or toxic drywall known by the world?

All donations are checked, be it food, clothes, or shelters. I don't know about your country but that's how things work in Taiwan.

90% of food in your refrigertor is from China? You are free to eat made in China moon cake, Made in China pot stickers, canned food, drink made in China Soy milk.
I doubt you are willing to eat any food products from China. If you did, you would have already died of Cancer.
Neither would the Chinese in China. The rich in China spend their money buying FOREIGN made products.
You can demonstrate all your loyalty to China by moving back to China and destroying your US citizenship.

Thats a pretty bold statement. Perhaps you can proof how Chinese people die from eating food in China? Perhaps you can also explain how China's population can get to 1.3 Billion if we do in fact die from eating our own food?

That explains Taiwan's failure with the rescue effort to this natural disaster. Do you check for cocaine in the cash people donate as well? because 90% of all bills has traces of cocaine and other toxins.

Does it say something about the reputation of Chinese-made goods?

Would there have been the same reaction from the residents had the pre-fabricated houses been of German, Japanese, or Swiss origin?
newties21
Hey...stop fighting please...let's stop fighting....

It's Ok...doesn't matter...

This batch of homes might be rejected, that doesn't mean all the other materials and financial help is rejected.

Let's have some proportion.

Now the aid is entering Taiwan very rapidly, and bulk of them came from China.

Let's hope that the suffering people will get relief soon....

And I also wonder what is the fate of those people in Fujian, are they well taken care of....

I made a thread where you can donate some money online to a charity organization. Anyways this is the link again:

This one you can donate to Tzu Chi (Buddhist organization and experienced in charity)

www.us.tzuchi.org

I want to say here, that a lot of material and financial help have been dispatched, and they've been accepted, and more fundraising is still ongoing, including by some Overseas Chinese groups, including in America and elsewhere.

Please dont just quote this one incident and then think it represents the overall situation.

Stop arguing and click on that link above icon_smile.gif

I don't think the fear was unfounded. It was abased on the poor track record of mainly-Chinese goods.

How does reputation of Chinese goods got to do with anything considering 95% of what those villagers had were most likely made in China.

The fact is, those township "leaders" decided to put politics over the need of the people.

Even if the percentage of goods that are Made in China less then 90%, 70% maybe even less then 50% The argument of "bad rep" still doesn't stand. If the people reject the temporary housing due to bad rep as Fox has put it, Taiwanese SHOULD have 0% of goods from China.

Japan wanted to send Taiwan these houses but Ma rejected them. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KlwGIB3EucQ

Instead, Ma asked China to send these:

Either way, Ma is doing a terrible job in every aspect to this crisis. There is alot of protest in Taiwan to impeach Ma.
