Qimonda declared bankruptcy already. Its Graphic DDR technology was purchased by Elpida and a Taiwanese company called Promos.

What remains are the Korean makers, the Japan-Taiwan alliance, and the US-Taiwan Alliance.

US: Micron.
Japan: Elpida.

In Taiwan, the two largest DRAM fabs have been allies of Micron for a long time.
This month, Taiwanese government formed a new umbrella company called TMC, which will facilitate the merger the three smaller Taiwanese companies. It will buy up to 20% of Elpida. Elpida will get some government money from Japan too.

The Micron camp at one point wooed TMC, but it didn't work out.

tough fight.

Taiwan Memory Co. is a desperate, last ditch effort to save what's left of Taiwan's entire DRAM industry, i think the name itself says it all.

TMC partnering with Elpida is too little too late. Elpida isnt even a significant presence in the industry and a latecomer into 50nm production, even America's Micron Technologies was way ahead of them.

With the huge debts and disarray of several different companies trying to work together it's going to be quite a task to keep Taiwan Memory above water.
It's quite sad that much of the remains of Taiwan's once thriving DRAM industry is being controlled by a minor japanese DRAM player.

Taiwan can always go back to farming.

Taiwan's DRAM makers have always been buying technology from Japan or US.

Nanya and Inotera use Micron (US)technology. Nanya and Inotera belong to the Formosa Plastic Group so they're fighting for themselves.

The other three use Elpida's. They were hit by the economic downturn and needed government money to bail them out. Instead of giving them free money the government set up TMC to force them to merge. Elpida in exchange promised to set up R&D in Taiwan to strengthen the alliance.

China will be the ultimate short term winner. High tech computer industry is all about cost of production. How else can a 1TB Hard drive sell for under $100. DDR2 800 for under $20. I have no doubt as the markets recover, new companies will pop up.

Japan should start developing software processors

China's product has a bad reputation. It probably would be detrimental.
The Japan-Taiwan alliance is the sensible way to go.

no, that's not how it works.
China can prop up Taiwan & Japan's DRAM industry by decrease or remove tariffs on Taiwan DRAM imports.

good point. China has the pockets while Taiwan can do so S&D(Search and development) for lower sized processors. though it will not be easy against a behomoth like Samsung.
