Personally, I am very excited about this movie. James Cameron has made so many of my favorite films: Terminator 2, Aliens, Titanic, etc.
The CGI and 3D technology is suppose to be amazing and new. And with a perfectionist like Cameron at the helm, it's going to be a sharp, intelligent and amazing movie.

I went to the IMAX advanced screening on Friday. Fox supposedly spent $250 millions on Avatar. Oh man, are they in deep sh!t.

I was not impressed by what I saw at all. Avatar is ten years too late. If Avatar came out ten years ago, it would have blown me away. Now, it is just another CGI fest, another Star Wars Episode I. Over the past few years I have seen better imagery in other movies and even video games.

The aliens, the "Avatars", are unimpressive and not very original. They are just big humans with pointy years and blue skins, dressed and acted like Native American Indians. I expect an alien race from a star system far, far away to look more different from human beings. The biggest problem is that the aliens do not look real at all. The aliens in Avatar looked and acted like cartoon characters.

The dialogues were very clique and awful (much like in Star Wars Episode I.) The environmental message was too heavy handed and lacked subtlety. Even the action scenes seemed somewhat lacking, unoriginal and perfunctory; I got the feeling that it's all "been there, done that."

I loved James Cameron flicks, but I was very disappointed by the trailer and the screening. James Cameron was the "Master"... ten years ago, and he has not made a movie in ten years. I think the ten year break from making big-budget movies might have taken a big toll on James Cameron. Avatar seems somewhat "outdated" on a regular screen. It seems like James Cameron has not kept up with the latest in filmmaking and fallen behind the curve.

Seen TV clips of this movie and it seems dumb.

The name they gave to this movie "Avatar" was probably done on purpose in order to cash in on the large audience for "Avatar: The last Airbender". Many people think this Avatar is the nick Avatar movie.

The people making the Last Airbender movie tried to get permission from these guys to add the word "Avatar". So it would have been "Avatar: The Last Airbender" but they said no. So they had to drop the Avatar part. So the movie will be called "The Last Airbender".

Funny if Avatar is a financial flop and the Last Airbender a hit. laugh.gif

Another problem is 3D. Avatar is specifically made for 3D and IMAX theaters. It does look good (but not awe-inspiring) in 3D, but in regular theaters the film will look and feel flat just like its trailer. How many people are going to see Avatar in 3D? There are not even that many 3D and IMAX theaters in American and the world. Most people are going to see Avatar in regular theaters, and they are going to be disappointed without seeing the imagery in 3D. James Cameron wanted to do an experiment in 3D filmmaking, and Fox paid for the $250-million experiment. 3D is still a niche market. I do not think Fox will be able to recover the money from a niche movie.

I would like to see hoth Avatars.

Sort of depressing to think this movie is probably going to flop, seeing the way people are talking about it. Oh, they look like Jar Jar Binks.. whatever.

I will check it out next weekend and see how great it is for myself. It looks interesting.

I am fairly sure I'll pay money to see James Cameron's Avatar during the opening week even though I was not impressed by the trailer nor the preview.

However, I have already decided that I am not going to see M. Night Shyamalan's The Last Airbender. I was a huge fan of the cartoon series, but all East Asians should feel insulted by Shyamalan's casting for The Last Airbender: all the main characters in this strictly East Asian mythology are Whites playing "yellowfaces", with the most interesting character reserved for his "pal" (i.e., some Indian kid plays Zuko.)

In addition, Shyamalan has made one good movie, a couple of average or below average ones, and too many that just really, really suck. His last two movies were both "Worst Film of the Year". He wrote pretty interesting stories, but he clearly couldn't direct and execute. Given his track record, there is no reason to think that The Last Airbender will not suck.

So, Avatar will get my money. Shyamalan and his all-Whitewashed-plus-one-Indian The Last Airbender will not.

Edit: Actually, there is one principal cast who's East Asian. General Zhao, the bad guy. Yup. The sole East Asian principal cast is the only bad guy in the film. So, The Last Airbender is about an evil Chinese/Korean/Japanese going after a bunch of White kids trying to save the world. So I suppose Shyamalan and Hollywood did throw a little bit of bone and leftover to East Asians.

That's Hollywood casting for ya.

haven't they learn from dragon balls..........white people doing martial arts doesn't work......get a clue ....i sure hope the last bender really is the last .......as for cameron Avatar .....i agreed it is 10 years too late.......hell ....video games has the same graphics....so i doubt it's gonna blow people away .........it's hard to believe this is cameron first movie in over 10 years.......

James Cameron titled his movie Avatar and copyrighted it before the Nickelodeon Avatar even showed. That's why Cameron has the rights to the title. The Avatar trailer is getting mixed reviews, but mostly positive. It's suppose to be seen in 3D so I won't judge how it looks until I see it in 3D on an IMAX screen. But I have to say, I've seen CGI before and the CGI in Avatar is outstanding. I can tell the difference but that may be because I am an art major. People who can't tell the difference between DVD and Bluray will not care much for how Avatar looks I suppose. I thought the movie looked unique to me---the concept of humans invading an alien world as the aggressor is a great idea you rarely see. It looked like a mix between Last of the Mochicans and Mech Warrior. It's really epic looking.

honestly the trailer looks wack.. didn't hype me up at all.. but the recent reviews based on some 15 min preview.. was insanely good. People are saying it's the best sci-fi flick in the last decade or whatever.. that this movie is one of those movie that will change blah blah blah... so i guess we'll see when the time comes.. but based on trailer.. I'm not that hyped.

Just read about it today in Empire magazine. The article sparked my interest, but the trailer not so much. Some trailers are bad while the movie is good, so I don't let it affect my expectations much. I still want to see it. Since it was meant for 3D, then 3D is the only way to watch it. According to the guy in Empire it was beautiful. I think he has seen his fair share of movies so I trust that judgment. What worries me a little (from the trailer) is the story. I'll watch it, but I won't expect too much of it.
