Full Version: Filipinos and the word "HUH?"

Theres tons and tons of filipino patrons where I work at, and they're always asking me questions on where things are, and I respond to them by speaking very SLOWLY, LOUDLY, AND CLEARLY, and it never fails at all....they always respond by saying "HUH?" Goddam...it drives me crazy sometimes. Alot of Asians and non-Asians are being driven crazy by this to the point of sounding racist or to the point of wanting to inflict bodily harm.

At least say "pardon" or "excuse me?" instead of just "HUH?", it makes you sound ignorant. I understand they cannot understand English that well, and always want you to repeat it, but when i'm speaking to you, LOUDLY and CLEARLY, please get it the first time. These people drive me crazy sometimes. Every single time you speak to them, they always say "HUH?".......arghhhhhhhhhhhhhh kick.gif

Filipinos don't say "huh", they say "hah" or something

Yes they say "hah" NO other race does this beside them. Must be a cultural thing to drive people crazy and look massively ignorant. And for the record, i see hundreds of filipinos each day, and I have yet to see one that looks even remotely "caucasian".

That is not a flame at all.

did they say it at, like 50 yrs in the past already? icon_wink.gif

Filipinos say HA?

In eastern Canada it's EH? in western Canada it's HEY?

Everyone has their own little way of saying "WHAT?!"

I don't think it's a Filipino thing, in Hawai'i people respond with "Heh?!" and cultural historians attribute it to Southern Chinese.

This is how I knew you were judging Ilocanos shallowly...you really didn't spend enough time in Hawai'i to know.

"HEH!!!" Is old school, plantation days. Old people with super thick old pidgin (like this Portuguese cowboys I met) almost yells "Heh!?"...and to them it's not rude or stupid it's cultural.

o_O my mom goes HEH/HUH/HAH and when I don't repeat myself, she whacks me with her slipper -_-....

"ha?" or "hah?" or "huh?" came from the contraction of visayan word "unsa?" as "s" in visaya becomes "h" just like:

tisa (tagalog) = tiha (visaya) = brick (english)
tasa (tagalog) = taha/tahal/tahar (visaya) = sharpen (english)
muson (tagalog) = muhon (visaya)
sugarol (tagalog) = hugarol/sugarol (visaya) = gambler (english)

so instead of saying "unha?" as replacement of "unsa?" visayans would just say 'ha? sometimes spelled as "hah" or "huh" in english spelling just like tagalog asking for pardon "ano?" or "no?" or "noh?"
