Sorry Rico I didn't see this.
In Australia the mortality rate from Swine flu hasn't been as severe as initially feared. It is pointless quarenteening patients with suspected swine flu because clinically you can't tell the difference between swine flu and "normal" flu(and to be honest it doesn't matter anyway), and the test that differentiates between the 2 takes about 5 days to be done. If there is a flood of specimens to be tested, then it can blow out to much longer. In Australia it averages 3 weeks. So unless the govent is prepared to quarenteen everybody with flu like symptoms for a minimum of 5 days whats the point. Think of the effect on the Singapore economy if 10-20% of the population had 5 days off work due to the flu. Furthermore, swine flu(as is most flu viruses) is very contagious and can be spread even without flu like symptoms becoming apparent. Essentially trying to stop swine flu is like trying to hold back the tide, can't be done.
The test will come in the Northern winter. The majority of Earth's population lives in the Northern hemisphere and flu speads more easily in winter months, so the fear at the moment is what will the mortality rate be when more of earth's population will be at risk. The sampling in the Southern hemisphere is not as big. The other fear is that H1N1 may mutate to become a more lethal virus, and people who have not previously been exposed to the virus will be more succeptible to it then those who already have been and therefore have at least a partial immunity to it. This is the reasoning behind some mothers in the US having swine flu "parties" where they invite kids with flu like illnesses to parties in the hope of infecting their own children with a strain that is not as deadly as it could be. The other concern is that in Australia anyway, it seems that pregnant women are more vulnurable to H1N1 then the general popualtion. A higher percentage of pregnant women in Australia have been admitted to ICU with I think 2 resultant deaths as a result of H1N1. But because the sampling is so small its hard to be sure, we'll know more in 6 months.
The up side is that a H1N1 flu vaccice is currenly under safety trials and should eb available in the next few months. For obvious financial reasons the company is trying to get it out before the Northern winter.
WRT what you should do. If you have flu like illness ie fever >38 muscle aches and pains, shakes sore throat runny nose cough etc. You should stay home. The best treatment for the flu is still rest, plenty of fluids, eat healthy and look after yourself. So in your case, no sex or booze
