Taiwanese exports to China in the first half of this year reached US$26 billion, while imports from China hit US$10.23 billion, leaving the country with a trade surplus of US$15.77 billion, the Bureau of Foreign Trade reported yesterday.

The value of H1 exports to China and that of Chinese imports were down by 35.9 percent and 36.8 percent year on year respectively, bureau statistics show.

In total, trade with China in the first six months hit US$36.23 billion, a 36.2 percent decline compared to the same period last year, the statistics showed.

The bureau, however, said it was worth noting that outbound shipments to China in June set a new single-month high of NT$5.25 billion for this year, but it represents a year-on-year fall of 29.2 percent.

In June, Taiwan imported US$2.05 billion worth of products and services from China — a new monthly high for this year, but a drop of 30.8 percent compared with the same month last year.

It posted a contraction of 39.2 percent in imports from China in May, bureau officials said.

Both imports from and exports to China seem to have fallen.

DPP bull$hit about the mainland taking more money from the island, but if this number increases any step for independence will be a sorry one.
