I was a bit surprised to see there was an Indian chat on here. I always thought Indians were not Asians. Are they?
lengchai
Yes they are Asians. To be specific they are southerwestern Asians. Just that they're not East Asian if that's what you meant.

But where are the other Asians? The Central Asians? Iraq, Afgan, Kazaks etc.
fivers
I think it stops at India.. Iraqis aren't Asians...

the terms "asia", "europa" and "libya" are the names of women of greek mythology.

in the past the greeks used the word asia to solely refer to persia and sometimes turkey.

when alexander came all the way to india, "asia" was considered to end in india.

later the meaning changed and now chinese, japanese and koreans call themselves as east "asian" while the other countries call themselves as south east "asian". ironically the term asian became adopted by the countries in asia because of india. a lot of chinese people did not like the term "oriental" so they decided to adopt the term asia from india.

on the other hand countries like india, iran (persia), turkey etc. see themselves as too ancient to belong to any group embarassedlaugh.gif

sometimes they dont consider themselves as asian eventhough in the past the same term was used to describe them.

I shink Indian Chat should be eliminated from this forum completely.

The foolishness of some people who shink "Asia" should be taken in geographical sense, has caused this error.

If that is the case, this forum should also include Saudi Arabia, Iran, Turkey, and so on, becaourse they is also geographically considered part of Asia.

Is foolish.

True but East Indians were always considered as part of the east ASIAN group. Not sure why but maybe it's their culture or food that are related to East Asians.

No wait!!! This site should be renamed since it's "ASIAfinest". It never specified EASTASIA in the sense.

Indians are considered Asian because of our culture, its sandwiched in-between the Middle East and East Asia; however, our culture is actually pretty different compared to Middle Eastern countries considering the majority of India is Hindu. People may think India is a part of the Middle East b/c some of us may look like Middle Easterners as ignorant as it is, but we have a culture more related to the Orientals because a lot of ancient Indian and most notably Chinese ideas were exchanged with one another(not to say that Middle East didn't have impact on India b/c it did). Most of the Middle East is also Abrahamic wise rather than Dharmic which plays a pretty big role.

Indians never identify themselves as "Asians" because Western Medias often make fun of Asians as "inferior" so they don't want to be lumped together with East Asians.

Indians do identify themselves as "Hindu(s)".
Zaw-Gyi
yes absolutely whether they like it or not

I've never heard of any Indian call themselves anything but Asian if they've ever been answered a question about ethnicity.

Fark that, this is what makes me offended.

It's time this term be clarified, once and for all.

How can you put an Indian and a Korean together side by side, and think they belong to the same group?

That is what I said, and what I meant.

"Asian" should be used as a classification by a particular cultural and racial group, not by stupid geographical location.

Otherwise you can put a Turk and a Vietnamese and say they belong to "Asian" too, farking stupid. The stupidity is endless.

Why not from now onwards Indians and other south-asians just use "Desi" , this is a good term, please start using this term and no more mixing with "Asians"

lol@TDH, why jump on your horse.. I asked the question because to me it wasn't clear but now I realize they are indeed part of the Asian continent.
I just wondered where to draw the line...

I tell you good idea, from North East Asia to South East Asia.
That will be sufficient.

No more other regions.

This thread is so stupid that it shouldn't have existed past the first reply. Indians are just as Asians as Chinese. In fact Indians were Asians first, Chinese were Orients (most commonly, even though the term also applied to the Indian subcontinet and Western Asia in the early times).

Besides, there are several cultural traits that are similar between South Asians and East Asians through cultural exchanges centuries ago. Where do you suppose Buddhism originated? How do you explain Southeast Asian language, culture and language being heavily incluenced by ancinet Indian culuture?

Back to my original point, close this thread please.

PS: I didn't mean OP was stupid, but the thread in general.
