I don't know why someone close the last Mien topic but to answer your question about them.

Mien people are very similar to the Hmong people. They were once a part of China and was consider Chinese until the 1800, during the fall of the last dynasty, they decide to go into hiding during the first World War. They live in the mountain of Laos for some time and fought in the secret war in Viet Nam. After the Viet Nam war was over, a lot of them came to America for helping the US. They are also known as the Yao people. They are the aboriginal people of Southern China, look very similar to the Filipino, Indonesian, Laos, etc. Although some of them look like Chinese. There not a lot of them in the world, most of them live in the Bay Area with a lot of them in Oakland, Richmond. They are 4 tribe that they are related to. It is Hmong, Mien, Khmu(Aboriginal people of Laos, and the Lao(not Laos). These four tribe mostly concentrate near the Golden Triangle which is where most of the opium and heroin comes from. Within the Mien tribe, there are 12 clan. That is why there are 12 last name that Mien people have which is

Saechow
Saetuern
Saelee
Saephan

And the rest I don’t really know. In America, they are very much like the Hmong and Khmu people, typically into gangbanging and etc. In Richmond, CA, most of the member of the gang COB (Color of Blood) is Khmu, with some other, and their rival SOD ( Son of Death) is mostly Mien, Vietnamese etc. I do not know what else to tell you about them.

Someone told me that Miens were aboriginals of the Yangtze river? 0_o

yeah, Miens speak a language related to Miaos but i think they are genetically different from Miaos to some extend. Probably due to contact with Tai people.

Nice pictures. I have a question regarding the two maps. One stated the migration down across the Huang He and then to Yangtze. But the other one showed that Hmong-Mein started off at the Yangtze. Are these different time?

I never knew Miens look so Hmong. lol

Hmong Americans and Mien Americans don't look a like at all though.

Actually, Mien and Hmong do look alike. I know because I have many Mien friends and I went to school with lots of Mien.
The Yangtze = When the Hmong and Mien ancestors settled down in Yangtze after fleeing the North. In one of the Chinese documentary that
I've seen, it said that the Miao and Yao were people of Chiyou.

The Mien people today are formed from three groups - Mien(Yao), Hmong and Tai.
The Yao(Mien) have been living with the Hmong for thousand and thousand of years. When the Yao ancestors migrated to Guangxi, they were
heavily influenced by the Zhuang, which is why today, the Pan Yao or Iu-Mien Americans language sound similar to Laos and Thai.
Almost all Mienh Americans are from the Pan Yao or Yao people of King Pan Gu.

The Baiku Yao (white trouser yao) and the Hong Yao (red yao) are very similar to Hmong.

It did said that long ago, a Mien King united the large Hmong people and smaller Mien people to fight against the Chinese.
This is probably why we are so close. Even during the rebellion led by Wu Tian Bao. He united both Yao and Miao to fight against the Chinese.

I bet if Hmong elders see them... they will just be known as other Hmong groups with different dialects.... My mom said they're Hmong.. even my Mien friend's mother said they're Hmong, even though the Chinese called them Yao.... confusing eh? Ask any elders and they will tell you that these Yao groups are Hmong... because the skirt hold a sense of being from the same lineage and sharing a distant single ancestor. My mother said, "TO BE HMONG, YOU HAVE THE HMONG SKIRT." According to my mother, the SKIRT represents the Hmong.. and it's true, every Hmong groups in China have the skirt even though they don't wear it.. according to Zhang Xiao, a Miao historian.

HONG YAO (red yao)

BAIKU YAO (white trouser yao) <== Very similar to us.

Of course, Mien were part of the Secret War in Laos, but only half of the Mien people were part of it.
The Mien were recruited under Gen. Vang Pao, but was assigned with a Mien general.

There were also some Mein with Pathet Lao just like the Hmongs. My dad told me stories of Hmongs raiding Mein villages and them doing the same to Hmongs; ambushes etc...

tutorboy
Yes, but overall, both Mien and Hmong live in peace with one another.
Unlike us Hmong, where we are a mixture of many Hmong groups, the Mien in the United States are from
one group of Mien only, known as the Pan Yao (Iu-Mienh).
