Japan Threatening to Oust US Troops From Okinawa
http://news.antiwar.com/2009/10/07/japan-t...s-from-okinawa/The DPJ is reportedly playing hardball now, however, threatening to kick the US military off the island of Okinawa, which is where the bulk of their presence is situated. The islanders have long complained about the major burden of tens of thousands of US soldiers occupying a large chunk of their island.
If Japan succeeds, then she can save billions of dollars every year.

Well, I hope they go back to their country and give the same respect they did for Japan.

I think is better if Japanese kick them out of japan since they think japan is the best place for all kind of sex fantasy. Here in the state I feel embarrass that many American I survey have fantasy about japan "Sexually". I feel these people have no moral or taught about respecting culture and tradition in general. And plus japan society is a disgrace to other asian and those white are doing the same thing to there country in Asia. It is time for all Asian members to secure our economy and culture in a more aggressive way before it is too late.

I don't see how it can be done legally. I think the US troops in Okinawa are there from some treaty after ww2.

Japan can kick all the US troops out if they want.
Not sure how much money they would actually save though. Especially since they will probably end up increasing their own military budget.

Japan has been highly reluctant to spend anything one military period. It's unlikely that they would increase defense spending to any significant degree if they succeed in displacing the US military presence. In fact, I doubt they would have the funding to do it when their social programs are about to go bankrupt. Japanese security would pretty much be compromised.
Awesome. We can hit 'em where it hurts.

I can see there's a lot of misinformed or uninformed opinions here on what's really going on.
Okinawa is indeed hoping to decrease the US Military presence there, as they have been for several decades; and rightfully so. I would agree the US Military presence there is excessive, but also, it's a necessity unfortunately.
And no, Okinawa (or Japan in general) does NOT have the right to kick out the Military as they see fit. That was agreed upon during their surrender in WW2, and still is currently the way the law remains. Yes, Japan has it's own government and all such, on the surface, but there are considerations to be made here when it comes to whatever "demands" they would put on the US Military presence.
First of all, Japan doesn't have an offensive military, as per their own constitution. They do have the JSDF (Japanese Self Defense Force), but it is in NO shape to repel an attack in force, such as an invasion from North Korea or China, which would be basically enviable if there weren't any US Forces here. So, first they'd have to build up their own forces, which of course could take several years before they were ready, not to mention billions of dollars in expenditures.
The next thing they'd have to consider is trade agreements. Right now, well over 70 percent of their industrial trade goes to or through the United States, with very low import taxes levied. Should they wish to push Americans off their soil, however, you can bet those trade agreements would be renegotiated over night, and the new government knows this too.
Basically, what's truly going on right now is "the people" are crying out for what they want, or what they think they want anyway, and the new bosses are promising to "look into it". But before anyone goes waving their hands in the air in victory of anything, look at the big picture first and realize what it would entail and how long it would take...

Very strange. Okinawa Governor Nakaima always pushed for the Military bases to be removed.. why would he soften his stance so suddenly?

Why would japan willingly pay the US BILLIONS of dollars to have their troops fu-k around on their land? You'd think America would be paying the japanese billions of dollars after hiroshima and nagasaki. But then again, didn't the whales bomb japan? fu-k YOU WHALE! fu-k YOU DOLPHIN!

1. Do the Japanese military, or Police pay you for being in the neighborhood?
2. Japan was in large, responsible for the WW2 in the pacific theater, thus, why should the US be paying for something they didn't start?

Yes, shame on all those dirty perverted Americans who goes to any foreign country to pleasure their sexual fantasy, but shame more on those countries who creates these sex industries. They're the ones to be blamed for giving their country and their people a bad name. Money must be that important that you're wiling to make your people look like sexual preys to Americans.
