Are you sure its a mainland culture thing? as far as I know avoiding 4 is a very recent thing in mainland and most likely come from oversea Chinese community.

It is this mentality and attitude that makes the Malays distrust the non-Bumiputras. Most Malaysians have lost all connections to their ancestral roots and are stuck in Malaysia/Singapore except the new arrivals.

Nah, both SG and MY do speak with accents.
You find theirs strange is due to cantonese influence , whereas ours is derived from Hokkien.
Consider this to be vice-versa.

In fact I find Malaysians and Singaporeans have a strange accent no matter what language they speak, be it English, Cantonese or Mandarin. I can't say much about their Hokkien as I don't speak that. They may be fluent in all, but they have their own very strong accent. Sorry to say but some I don't find very pleasant.

Singaporean Chinese speak mandarin, Malaysian Chinese on the other hand.....

Msian chinese can speak some mandarin. Their mandarin is just like Sporean chinese , with a strange accent. Same as their english. embarassedlaugh.gif

That's an interesting statement. Then I'd like to know what you think of the East Malaysian accent. The East Malaysian Chinese mainly converse in Hokkien here too you know.

I am not sure about that, as i don't really know anyone from there besides my neighbours who are from Sabah and they speak Cantonese.
