The Japanese emperor recently waded into Japanese nationalistic controversy. He stated that compulsory, or required repititions of the Japanese national anthem and flag salute encouraged feelings of the past. Disappreciated by South Korea and China, I hope this will help ease the tempestuous tension throughout East Asia.
