the largest historical building in Phnom Penh, now, is rebuilt it !

History:
Central Market, is a large market constructed in 1937 in the shape of a dome with four arms branching out into vast hallways with countless stalls of goods. It is located in Cambodia's capital city, Phnom Penh. When it first opened in 1937, it was said to be the biggest market in Asia, and today it serves as a fully functional historical market.

news:
PHNOM Penh's iconic Central Market has reopened part of its newly refurbished eastern side, finishing the first phase of a US$4.2 million renovation project. Sok Kim Heng, president of the market, said Sunday that the new wing opened Thursday. "For the second stage, we will open the jewellery stores soon; now we are renovating," he added. Arte-Villa Pare of France began the project in December 2008 and is due to have completed each of four stages by the end of 2010.

Cambodians are too obsessed with bright colors.

Cambodians are too obsessed with bright colors.

And the first thing they do is hang up sheets to ghetto up the joint.

The bright colors are French influenced from the art deco era. I looks great thought.

As for hanging up the sheets, I think it is temporary placed to block out the sun, at least until they [the shop owners] get their merchandises setup in their newly constructed stalls.

Anyways, the renovation of this great iconic building has changed the image of this area dramatically. Before the area looked dull but now the new colors have made the area look much nicer and cleaner.

The next thing the government should do is renovate the buildings around it or tear them down and build more modern structures so the area does look as ghetto as it does now.

4 million bucks for a paint job and pavement? It looks better, but not 4 million dollar fresh.

I just want to see more "development." This is just "repairing" and I think eventhough the project has given Phsa Thmey a bit new look, but all in all, its the same Phsa Thmey.

It's a "HISTORIC RENOVATION", which means that they are working to conserve, protect & rebuild the building to it's "ORIGINAL" architectural details & integrity also making/ replacing structural supports, pipes & other little details to improve the building & make it lasts for the future. $4 million dollars is chump change for detailed conservation works like this.

All around the world cities & countries are working to preserve & restore their old historical buildings & bring new life & characters back to the areas the building are in. It adds character, history & charm that modern building severely lack.

I love this building. I was surprised when I found out it was built in 1937. It must be incredible back then. Spectacular design. When you see from the air you just wonder how those guys did it back then without technology exist today, like crane. Like Angkor Wat sorta.
Metropolitan
Is this where my mom bought me knock off columbia, eddie bauer, and other clothes that don't fit right? They do a single layer stitch and make the butt area too small. WTF?

Nice paint job. A little more organized I guess.

This is how it looked like in the 30's, back when Phnom Penh was a nice and clean modern city.
