Via my friends at Madman Entertainment I just got the news that the next Studio Ghibli feature anime will be Taketori Monogatari (The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter), an adaptation of the classic Japanese fairy tale, to be directed by Isao Takahata.
He is probably most famous for Hotaru no Haka (Grave of the Fireflies), but he also directed lots of other Ghibli and non-Ghibli anime and TV shows, including a good swag of the 1970s Lupin III series. biggthumpup.gif

On top of this good news, Hayao Miyazaki is currently negotiating with the Ghibli crew to make two other anime features over the next two years.
Seems like the Ghibli/Pixar/Disney links have finally given the great Japanese animation company the exposure it deserves. beerchug.gif

I've read about Taketori Monogatari last year. It's an old 10th-century Japanese tale about a princess from the Moon. In some ways, it could be considered an early example of proto-science fiction. A number of modern sci-fi anime & manga have been inspired by Taketori Monogatari, so it would be cool to finally see the original story itself be adapted into an anime movie, by Studio Ghibli no less!
