This is the kind of architecture that we should build and popularize throughout the Philippine Islands. It's something we can call our own. Something native and local. None of those American Neoclassical and Spanish Colonial copycat.

How come we're not proud of our Malay roots? Do you see the pictures above. They are very beautiful. You see, we're not all that bad. There is actually something good about our native heritage.

The first task of our young men and women is to develop within themselves the nationalistic spirit of our revolutionary heroes, rejecting pernicious foreign influences. The second task is to participate seriously in the economic development of our country by pursuing those professions for which there is a great need during an era of rapid industrialization. Only a nationalistic administration can inspire a new idealism in our youth, and with its valid economic program make our youth respond to the challenging jobs and tasks demanding full use of their talents and energies.

QUOTE
I call upon my countrymen to remember that we have not always been so low and so ignoble, that our nationalist revolution of 1896 was indeed the first blow struck against an imperialist power and that the words and deeds of Rizal, Bonifacio, Del Pilar and Mabini once stirred the hearts of liberty-loving men all over Asia. Our national salvation lies first in reasserting the ideals of our heroes in their fight for emancipation, and second in changing the course of our economic efforts by giving emphasis to nationalist industrialization.

His eloquence and facility with the Spanish language were recognized throughout the Hispanic world. The Enciclopedia Universal says of him: Recto, more than a politician and lawyer, is a Spanish writer, and that among those of his race (he is pure Tagalog on both sides), there is not and there has been no one who has surpassed him in the mastery of the language of his country's former sovereign.

I'm glad some Pinoys have discovered themselves. There was a thread here about a Government office in Rizal Province which was to be built. I think it was a Provincial Building (not sure). The design was very European. I criticized it since it does not represent our people. But some Pinoy posters here praised it.

While others have awaken, millions are still into embracing the culture of our colonizers.

So sad.

Still a long way until other nationalities will identify us as a distinct people.....Separate and Distinct.

Today usually out of respect seniors are called " "Don" or "Doņa". But I think it is being used less in some places.

Photos showed many nice buildings and homes.

But some of those homes had too much glass. They were talking about that here on a tv program. It seems many new homes here are sort of copying US style of housing. Homes which have many large glass windows and doors. It might look nice but in the tropics it really is not advisable because of the heat it lets in. You would then probably need central air to cool the house down but that uses energy which is getting expensive. Seems the old way of building homes in the tropics before air conditioner or electric fans was the correct way to build homes. This included a high ceiling. And if made of wood a four sided roof. Many new homes here are US standard 8 feet which is ok for temperate climate but not really recommended for Tropical climate. Home developers could care less about all that. They just like using glass and low ceilings since they save on building cost.
And remember in earthquake or Hurricane/Typhoon prone areas its is better to have the less glass possible. In the photos the buildings with the four sided roofs is a good design against Hurricanes/Typhoons winds, that is if the buildings or roofs are made of wood.

I don't know why people find it laughable for Filipinos calling themselves part of the Malay race or Malayo-Polynesian. Must be the Bumiputra attitude of the Malaysians getting the ire of the Chinese wannabees. embarassedlaugh.gif Not that I condone that attitude, in the contrary, I am against any bias and discrimination due to color, creed, race or ethnic affiliations and sex.

Before the western colonizers came the distinction culturally and racially between Indonesians, Malaysians and Filipinos was non existent.

Lindsay and those linguist ethnologue freaks are inventing races as there are many languages and dialects. Lindsay true color is pro Aryan, btw. embarassedlaugh.gif Find it absurd the so called Indian nationalism and the refuting of many Indian scholars of the Aryan Invasion theory.

The first Filipino by the name of Jose Rizal, who was 1/4 Chinese accdg to the Fil-Chinese had no qualms calling himself and the Indios Bravos, MALAYAN Filipinos.

You see Filipino culture isn't JUST Malay. It's a mixture of everything. Culture is the expression of a people's general experience throughout history. That's why fiestas, jeepneys and bahay kubos are still considered part of the Filipino culture because they tell the story of how the Filipino is today.

We then come to the point of CONTRACTING COLONIALISM. It's an unconscious attempt to manipulate foreign elements into the Filipino liking. That's why the Christianity we have, a basic European concept, is not really pure Christianity but rather a religion with many animistic elements native to pre-Hispanic Philippines.

Another point is that why do we have to be compared to the Malaysians or the Indonesians to see what being a "PURE" Filipino is all about? Weren't they influenced by the Indians, the Spanish, the British and the Dutch?

You see, that's where purists fail. They fail to see that no culture is distinctly their own and that, with the growing rise of globalism, ever since man started invading their neighbors, there is no such thing as a pure race, a pure country and most importantly, a pure culture. Culture is culture, there is no varying degree in a culture as it is a way of expression.

So STOP TRYING TO MAKE THE PHILIPPINES APPEAR TOO MALAY. WE'RE NOT JUST MALAYS. OUR CULTURE IS UNIQUE, A MIXTURE OF MALAY, INDIAN, CHINESE, JAPANESE, SPANISH, AMERICAN AND SO MUCH MORE. LET'S BE OPEN MINDED HERE. STOP BEING A PURIST.
