California Vietnamese Celebrate Bush Re-Election, Victories in Local Offices
Vietnamese in San Jose and throughout California celebrated the re-election of George W. Bush as well as victories of Vietnamese Americans in local offices nationwide, according to Nam Nguyen, editor of the Vietnamese-language Cali Today.
California is home to the largest overseas population of Vietnamese, approximately 600,000, and the population is predominantly Republican.
"Many of our readers called in on election night and said how pleased they were about the turnout for Bush," said Nguyen. "They heavily favor Bush and feel contented that he won. One reader called us near midnight to tell us he spent hours waiting to vote and that he felt it was worth the wait."
Nguyen also said that Vietnamese are willing to overlook the sluggish economy during Bush's term and they feel it has been improving. In terms of the war in Iraq, he said many feel it is wrong to switch leaders in the midst of a conflict.
Vietnamese also rejoiced in victories of Vietnamese Americans in local races. In California, Republican Councilman of the city of Garden Grove, Tran Thai Van, won a seat on the state assembly. Other Vietnamese Americans won school board seats across the state. In Texas, Huy Vo, also won a seat on the state assembly.
"There’s much excitement in Vietnamese American communities in the United States. Vietnamese have done well in local politics and we got Bush in the White House. This is a season for Vietnamese to celebrate," said Nguyen.
