When I first went to a traditional Hmong funeral, I felt the sorrows in the air. I felt what it meant to be human. At the same time, I felt the beauty of the Hmong ancient ways and rituals. My experience at a traditional Hmong funeral made me think more about what it meant to be a moral person and how you are supposed to show it, to the elders, to your parents and to all those around you. I felt what it meant to be Hmong.

Thaum ua neej nyob, tsis hlub niam thiab txiv, thaum lawv ncaim lub ntuj no ces mas li ooooooh, hais tias "i miss you, i love you."
Why not tell your parents you love them when they're alive? Why not help them, comfort and support them when they're alive? Why not be a good daughter and son to them when they're still alive?
Why say "I miss you, I love you" when they're already gone from this world? You suppose to show and love them when they're still living.
Ugh. Menyuam dabtsi. Tsis paub hlub yu niam yu txiv li. selfish and naive.
