Singapore's first language is English, and they have insanely hard English curriculum for high school students. I'm pretty sure average high school graduates from Singapore have better technical writing skills compared to US high school graduates.

still, some employers may look for Chinese speaking people.

so one may have better opportunities as a bilingual.

the use of english keeps things fair cuz it's seen as a neutral language.

if the government showed favoritism towards chinese, the malaysians and indians would feel alienated.

Yea, it's a pretty huge disgrace. Not only she fails in her speech, she's a credit card fraud too. icon_neutral.gif

Malays and Tamils you mean. Malays and Tamils(dominant ethno-linguistic Indian group in Singapore) have been around Singapore since the earliest days of its history and were part of the nation building process.

singapore, like hongkong, was a british colony. that's probably why they speak english.

Although Chinese are majority, not all Singaporean are Chinese. There are many Indians and Malays.
Maybe they speak in their own origin languages in their community, but when they speak with other race, they need neutral language.

Singapore was a British colony, but actually Singapore was a state in Malaysia federation.

The first language in Malaysia is Malay. If Singaporean use English as first language, maybe that because majority of them are Chinese, but there are Malays and Indians in significant number.

I say "maybe" because I am not Singaporean.
