Indonesia: We Have Strongest Asian Bid For 2022

Indonesia believe that they will have Asia’s strongest bid for the 2022 World Cup as South Korea and Japan won't be awarded the tournament.
The South-East Asian nation has thrown its hat in the ring for 2022 and believes that the passion and spirit of the country will give it an advantage when FIFA makes the big decision in December 2010.
Recently, Goal.com met Nugraha Besoes, the General Secretary of the Indonesian Football Association and asked him about his country's plans for the World Cup.
Why did you decide to bid just for 2022 and not 2018?
We chose 2022 because there is still a lot of time for us compared to 2018. It is 13 years away and better for us to make preparations.
It is not only about infrastructure but we also have to prepare our national team. We want to enter the World Cup with a good national team compared to others.
Is there a chance that the 2022 World Cup will come here?
We have to do our best and prepare as well as we can. We have to know how far how we can do compared to others which have developed more than us.
If it happens, it will be the first South-East Asia to host the World Cup. We are a huge country with a big population and so many possibilities.
The atmosphere of football in Indonesia is great. Sepp Blatter gave a speech praising Indonesia’s spirit to fight for 2022.
So your theme is passion?
Yes, we have the passion. Our league attendances are the second highest in Asia behind Japan and we have the second highest amount of sponsorship.
Is Indonesia the best Asian candidate for 2022?
If Japan and South Korea, drop out then yes. Japan and Korea already had their chance. I don’t think FIFA will give it to them Then there is only Qatar. I don’t think they will make it. So we are very strong in Asia.
How about Australia?
Australia has so many international events – with women and youth. We don’t have that in Indonesia.
Who will win 2018?
I hope Europe wins 2018, maybe England. Most probably England. Then Asia’s turn can come next.
There have been a number of earthquakes recently and there were also the Jakarta bombings in July. Will these damage the bid?
These things could happen anywhere. I was in Mexico at the 1986 World Cup not long after they had suffered a big earthquake. Even terrorism is not happening just in Indonesia but security is the number one priority for us.
