Everybody gets lazy once in a while, but it seems that Lao people are more lazier than others.

In Laos, most people don't have a real goal or drive and too many people are just going through the motions. Most employees rarely have the authority to make decisions. Jobs tend to be very narrowly defined, and it is often difficult to find the one person who knows how to perform a certain task. Interruptions are also common.

A long lunch hour and nap are a normal part of the work and school day in Laos. Official government work hours provide for a two hour lunch and nap period in the afternoon and many Lao people go home to eat and relax, therefore it takes so much time to get things done in Laos. In advanced industrial countries, most employees stay at work all day and they grab something light to eat such as a sandwich then they get stuck into their work, as a result productivity and output is quicker.

Time is also not important in Laos. Most people can arrive late to work and it's very easy to make up fake excuses. Lao people don't tend to be as preoccupied as westerners with "efficient" use of time. Appointments may be delayed or not kept at all and this is acceptable in Lao culture. Friends may drop by without previous arrangements and it's not uncommon for people to receive last minute dinner or wedding invitations.

Even though Laos doesn't have as many public holidays compared to Thailand, Lao people still enjoy partying as much as Thai people. Special occasions in western society such as Christmas, Birthdays and Valentine's Day doesn't exist or have any meaning in Lao culture but people still celebrate them as an excuse to take the day off.

Lao students rarely read books or study hard at home. Instead preferring to watch TV, party or waste their time doing something unproductive. Most of the smartest people in Laos received their education in another country. Laos have universities but the qualifications are only treated as local and not internationally recognised.

There are different reasons why Lao people are lazy. The lack of motivation and enthusiasm plays a part but the main reason is due to earning low wages. Working hard isn't going to increase their payments so most people will just do the job on their own tempo. Teachers are also not strict enough on their students.

Self employed Lao people work for themselves so they can open or close business on their own terms. Public transport drivers such as Tuk-Tuks and Jumbos are not paid at an hourly rate so they don't feel it's necessary to work flat out, there's always time to relax and have a beer when they feel like it.

Make no mistake, Lao people work hard with domestic chores in and around their homes, but Laotians are lazy in paid employment and education which is becoming part of everyday life in Laos.

embarassedlaugh.gif Just you wait, Savan will be coming with his enlighted interpretation of the factual observation above soon: He will interpret the fact to mean "peaceful life" instead. How can anyone be equating LAZINESS to being peaceful? embarassedlaugh.gif Only the LAO's do.

According to Savan Lao people have sabiasabai attitude. To put it in other word they are fatalistic people. Means no development.

"Sometimes living in too much free environment can work against Lao people in a foreign country. According to observation, some Lao people especially in America are highschool dropouts who never made it to tertiary education, they just enjoy drinking and partying and Lao parents don't really know how to teach their kids a good example because they themselves are uneducated expatriats who used to raise ducks and chickens during their life in Laos. embarassedlaugh.gif Viesnabotjampujia. For all fairness sake, every ethnic group has lazy people and everybody gets lazy sometimes. However, we must not forget the main focus of the generalization of the Lao's in the article.

As far as I know the Khmer are not known to be lazy even if some of our routines are considered not enough by others. embarassedlaugh.gif The point is that we have our daily routines. Each one of us has that. The Khmer behavior is governed by rules. Consider one of the behavior rules: "One gains knowledge from learning, and one gains wealth from working." Consider another one: "Work hard while you're young if you want to have an easier life in your old age." In addition, consider the Khmer traditional wishes for one another: "May your life be long, dignified, vigorous, prosperous, and joyous.” Consider another one: “Living is struggling and one must be independent”. You may say that those ideas are from the Buddha’s philosophy, but the Khmer are traditionally Buddhists. Consider another one – the word Khmer itself. People notice that the modern Khmer do not pronounce the final /r/ in the word Khmer, but the letter “r” is there for a purpose. It is a reminder to all Khmer that if Khmer do not work hard for things then they will end up having nothing. Here are some of the routines that I observed being carried out some non-English speaking Khmer people in the States. At night, they sew clothes for clothing subcontractors or they make traditional Khmer various foot items such as snacks or cakes or dishes for grocery stores and restaurants. Some Khmer grow gardens and sell their fruits, vegetables, and herbs to stores and neighbors. Some Khmer make donuts and make Chinese fast food dishes to meet the needs of others. Some go fishing in the early morning and come back late in the evening. They process their catches and keep some for the family and some for selling. Some make wooden products. There are more routines. However, the point is that each of us has a routine that we go through. The Khmer are always reminded that to "LIVE is to struggle". embarassedlaugh.gif

I have a Lao homie, he has 2 kids and doesn't work. all he does is stay home and b!tch about how hard it is to get a job when he doesn't even attempt to get out there and search for one. Everytime I'm at home he would come over and hit me up to smoke him up. I tell him straight up he's a fu-king scavenger, how come when you have weed, I never see you. Then after he's high he'll go digging into my fridge or cupboard scavenging around for food and then has the audacity to ask me how come I never have food? I tell that fool to go fu-k himself.

2. The Cambodian people are generally not very intelligent, lazy, careless, lack a sense of responsibility, lack a sense of self-respect, pride, and hygiene etc. The elite class of criminals are merciless, arrogant and lacking no less in the features mentioned above.

Khmer members kept discrediting Lao and Thai cultures, but they can't stand it when others discredit Khmer culture.

You're actually a decent Khmer though. I wonder why you're so different from the rest? You actually seem smart and you're light-skinned too.

I was just stating the facts that Cambodia was influenced by Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam, but Khmers got butthurt and are now attacking me. LOL!

Again, go argue with the experts who made those comments. biggthumpup.gif

Maybe if you guys had some pride in your country, you would try to resist foreign influences. First Indian culture took over your culture, but now Lao/Thai/Viet are taking over native Khamen culture.

Do Thais agree with your arrogance? That they adopted your culture and didn't have their own native culture?

Didn't a Thai member teach you guys that Bangkok is not a Khmer name? biggthumpup.gif

That's exactly my point. So why did you insult Thais by saying that they had no culture?

Did you forget what you had said? Not very smart, eh?

Anyway, so there's no need to insult Thailand because it's clear that you have a problem with Laos. Leave Thailand alone so it can continue to promote its culture to the world. There's no more room for Khmer jealousy.

So come at me.

Nonetheless, I kinda believe that Thai or even our counterpart neighbor "LAO" are greatly influenced by the Khmom regardless.
