Kelly Clarkson concert banned in Jakarta

http://marquee.blogs.cnn.com/2010/04/21/ke...karta/?hpt=Sbin
An Indonesian Islamic organization is saying an upcoming concert by Kelly Clarkson in Jakarta is banned under Islamic law because it is being sponsored by a tobacco company, according to a report Wednesday in the Jakarta Globe.

Muhammadiyah, the second largest Islamic organization in the world’s most populous Muslim country, has previously declared all smoking forbidden under Islam, according to the Globe report.

The head of the organization’s fatwa, or religious edict, department, Yanuar Ilyas, told the Globe that the no-smoking fatwa applied to Clarkson’s concert.

“We do not need to put another fatwa on a thing that is already clear,” the Globe quoted Yanuar as saying.

The U.S.-based campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids has also raised objections to the Clarkson’s Jakarta concert, scheduled for April 29 and sponsored by L.A. Lights cigarettes. The organization is asking Clarkson to cancel the sponsorship.

"If Kelly Clarkson goes ahead with this concert, she is choosing to be a spokesperson for the tobacco industry and helping them to market cigarettes to children," said the president of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, Matthew L. Myers. "If she rejects tobacco industry sponsorship, she can send a powerful message to children in Indonesia and around the world that they, too, should reject the tobacco industry's deadly products and marketing."

While many nations do not allow tobacco sponsorships of entertainment events, Indonesia has yet to sign on to such a ban, according to the campaign.

Clarkson’s fans are weighing in on her Facebook page, posting numerous comments calling on her to drop the tobacco sponsor.

But in a blog posting attributed to the singer Wednesday afternoon, she says her only option would be to drop the tour date, something she cannot do without disappointing her Jakarta fans.

“This is a lose-lose situation for me and I am not happy about it but the damage has been done and I refuse to cancel on my fans,” says the posting titled “Jakarta Mishap” and signed “Kelly.”

That is really weird.

I mean, we have Nidji with his Djarum Coklat concert.
Black has also sponsored many concerts.
L.A. and Sampurna are involved in many promotion deals.
In fact, most musical events in Indonesia are sponsored by tobacco.
The television is also still full with tobacco commercials.
and you can't drive 100m around with your motorcycle without seeing a tobacco add in the town.
Smoking is definitely not a sin in Indonesia.

So there is obviously another reason than tobacco.

?! yea really. niggå please...
almost every dance event is sponsored by cig companies and ofcourse: almost EVERYBODY SMOKES IN INDONESIA.

I can't handle the indoor gigs in Indonesia. Everybody smokes like there's no tomorrow.
Outdoor events are OK for me, but indoor live music gigs will usually have an atmosphere that is thick with smoke.

Cigarrette companies are making big business in Indonesia, and the arts and entertainment industry turn to them for sponsorship due to the lack of alternative funding.
The governemnt is certainly not doing enough to support the arts and entertainment industry. They have failed to capitalise on the lucrative pop culture that is flourishing.
Even Mira Lesmana, who prefers to avoid rampant consumerist links, is forced to turn to the only viable source of funding for her productions - the tabacco industry.

I against smoking, but this is weird,
worst way to promote anti smoking campaign based on majority religion.

last time when international anti-smoking campaign getting more intense,
indonesia participating with our own way : new fatwa saying smoking is haram.

. even tho it has a good intention , i dont believe entirely people from islamic organization behind this
DEL
There must be something behind this.

I can't help relating this with the banning of other international musicians in Indonesia.

I'm not a fan of cigarette and smoking tobacco... its irritate my eyes...
But I'm not a fan of banning concert either...

Just like DEL and GC pointed..., almost ALL of Indonesian happening performances are funded by tobbaco company money.... And majority of Indonesian male adult are chain-smoker...
It's only Muhammadiyah that banned smoking and promote the abolition of smoking by edicting fatwa haram (forbidden).., lot's of other Islamic Mahzab (school) still disagree upon this tobacco issue in the view of Islam.

So whatabout we put it this way: "if you belongs to Muhammadiyah organization, don't bother to buy ticket and see the concert... but don't prevent others to enjoy the show...."

Smoking is bad. Indonesia is addicted. We're all gonna die early. Muhammadiyah is doing the right thing. Period.
Majapahitans
^^^ there's a lot of Kiyai, Ulama, pak Haji that is a chain smoker....

I have seen the effect of long term smoking when I still worked at the pulmonology department. It's TERRIBLE. I have seen people die slow deaths because of it.

Too bad kretek is just so dang good...

@Majy

I understand that, you are right of course there will be individuals who would still smoke. The point is that Muhammadiyah as a organization is saying no to it, that's what matters.
Whether you think they are being hypocritical or not that's for you to decide but the organization as a whole is moving towards the right path.
Ralf
Will Slank get banned ?
The guys in that great Indonesian rock band eat a packet of ciggies for breakfast.
Or is it really about Muhammadiyah simply not liking Kelly Clarkson ?
I don't know what's going on. Has anybody else got the inside scoop ?

wtf is wrong with them? Kelly is cool!
Grandmaster C
i dont even know the b!tch...
JoeRagan
^^Yes Kelly is cool and I heard she/promoter just dump Djarum as sponsor and that should send a clear message to Indonesian young people to stop smoking!
Million of Indo peeps are so hard wired to smoking beyond believe that they rather buy ciggies than buy healthy foods, good books or medicines.
While it's true that the ciggies industry pay taxes, create jobs and sponsor many events but that don’t mean we have to sell our souls to the devils and give them virtual free rein to poison our youth.
