In the late 80s till early 90s, Sg hawkers tried to be healthy. They simply removed the pork fat and lard. Eg Char Kuay Tiao, Bak Chor Mee and wanton mee. Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) was also greatly removed or completely removed. Over night, the taste becomes weird. That remain for quite a few years till early 2000. A decade I guess. Few know how to make "adjustment" to the taste.
Pork fat and lard make a come back in early 2000, at "controlled" amount.
One reason why Singapore hawker food is losing ground to the Malaysian Chinese is the change in lifestyle in Singapore as it moves into the the first-world club. Hawker food is basically third-world stuff that appeals to older Singaporeans. The younger crowd are becoming foodies who prefer eating at trendy restaurants run by exciting young Singapore chefs (Wild Rocket) or bistros (Brussels Sprouts). The Malaysian Chinese, on the other hand, is still backward living the lifestyle of their grandparents who loved eating Char Kuay Tiao set in dingy coffee shops. Young Malaysian Chinese are still running hawker stalls for a living but this trade is dying out in Singapore because nobody there wants to be Mee Pok men anymore.

With the recent influx of mainland Chinese, the MSG in the food (restaurant or whereever) is HUGE !
With the mainland Chinese coming in by thousands, Malaysian worker in the factories had faded away. Many Malaysian do not know about this. Replaced by mainland Chinese. Mainland Chinese usually have 2 yr contract.
Malaysian Chinese replaced by Mainland Chinese? Wow, this is news to me too. Is this Iron Fist's idea? Perhaps, this is for the better. Malaysian Chinese are not loyal to Singapore. This is a treacherous trait that I cannot comprehend.

Water could be the one. In the 70s, when some guys wanted to test out desalination plant, it was "not practical, too expensive". High profile military hardware is not necessary. LKY would prefer to have diplomatic relationship. Obviously, the younger generation are brought from threats all round.
Those threats are going to be there after Iron Fist is gone. Right now, Iron Fist is much more intimidating to Malaysians than Singapore's military hardware. Iron Fist is like a lion-tamer. Lions are more afraid of the tamer than of his whip. Malaysians are emotional and irrational and get upset over the most silly things. Military hardware is not the answer because any hostilities would drive investors away from Singapore. This is why Iron Fist prefers diplomacy.

In the late 90s, Singaporean had started to go straight to Bangkok for short holiday. Malaysia crime rate is too high. Todate, the crime got worse.
Yes, Malaysia is getting from bad to worse. Its society is breaking down. Malaysian Chinese doesn't care because they are living under Malay rule. In Kuala Lumpur, there are secret agents from all over the world lurking around. It's a free for all.
It is a favorite destination for people from the Middle-East.
