These ones tell the story of the Battle of Mactan of 1521, the first meeting between Native Malay of the philippines & Spanish conquistadoros

This Exhibition of Recent Works of Manuel Paņares, Sugbo Sa Karaang Panahon is the 1st of a series of historical paintings, January 17-31, l997 at CAP Art Center #60 Osmena Blvd. Cebu City.

The Writings and Translation of the Work of Antonio Pigafetta donated by Dr. Alejandro Roces will be on display for the duration of the exhibition.



ENRIQUE, Magellan's Interpreter, A Cebuano?

Enrique, Magellan's slave bought in Malacca who confirmed Magellan's belief of a land further beyond Malacca. He was brought before the King of Portugal and later to Spain for Magellan's Expedition to discover the new trade route and thus discover Cebu. Upon landing in Cebu, Enrique became Magellan's interpreter to the King of Cebu, Humabon. Dr. Alejandro Roces claims that Enrique must have been a Cebuano or a Visayan in origin.



TRADING at Port of Sugbu, circa 1521

Chinese, Anamese, Cambodian, Chinese, Europeans and Arabs entered and traded at the Cebu Port. Gold, Cotton, and Slaves were bartered in exchange of silk, porcelain, beads, and other metals. Traders paid tribute to the King of Cebu.



Magellan's Galleons entered Cebu with a bang!

Magellan and his Spanish galleons entered Cebu harbor. The Spanish galleons fired their cannons and frightened the local people of Sugbo.



LUMPOT Weaver

Lumpot is native cotton grown in Cebu, the art of weaving in Southern Cebu is a lost art. According to Ramon Echavarria, Cebu Lumpot was an export product to China during the early years. Weaver is a Pintando, tattoed upper body is a practice of ornamentation blending with the heavy gold accessories of the early Visayans.



ENRIQUE and Magellan at Headman's Hut

Enrique accompanies Magellan to the Headman's hut to deliver to King Humabon the message of peace and friendship of Magellan.

Baptims of 800 natives with Humabon becoming King Carlos, and Humamay becoming Queen Juana after the Queen mother of Spain. Start of formal Christianity in Asia circa 1521. Queen Juana Receives the Sto. Niņo Queen Juana keeper of the Sto. Niņo of Cebu, Magellan's gift to the Queen on her baptism.



RAPE of Sugbo

The Rape of Sugbo is a symbolic representation as to how the Spaniards looted our gold, raped women, and abused our natural wealth.

The Visayan Pintado Warrior, a local custom of tatooing... the warrior is highly ornamented with gold and tattoo, a lifestyle in the tropical island of Sugbo.

Lapulapu defends Mactan and slays Magellan on its shores.

Lapu-lapu, defender of Mactan, Magellan falls; Lapu-lapu and Magellan are one on the Mactan shores. History binds them together.



HUMABON, Defender of Cebu

After the Lapulapu victory in Mactan, upon the instigation of Enrique, Humabon poisons and slays his Spanish guests. The cross falls...



QUEEN JUANA, Protector of the Sto. Niņo

After the Humabon massacre and when the cross fell, Queen Juana protects the Sto. Niņo. Queen Juana saves the Sto. Niņo for posterity, a Christian legacy for Cebu.

Isnt it pathetic, there was a KING name HUMABON and then the spanish come and erase his name and call him KING CARLOS, and then they come back 40 years later and call him SLAVE CARLOS, and now filipinos today are happy they were slaves and have no respect for their native heritage, Austronesian, what is that? the uncoqnuered igorots, lumads? they are backward savages, Moros? they are evil. yeah that's right i just made a thread for it.

i like all the pics up by dalawapo but i disagree with his comment. i for one thing believe that it was not easy as he thought it was. it wasn't easy at all.
