Lt. General Hodge said Korea was an enemy of the United States.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States...rnment_in_Korea

After Japan's surrender to the Allies, division at the 38th parallel marked the beginning of Soviet and U.S. trusteeship over the North and South, respectively. U.S. forces landed at Incheon on September 8, 1945 and established a military government shortly thereafter. The forces landing at Incheon were of the 24th Corps of the US Tenth Army. They were commanded by Lt. General John R. Hodge, who then took charge of the government. Four days before he arrived in Korea, Hodge told his officers that Korea "was an enemy of the United States." (Cumings, Bruce (1981). The Origins of the Korean War, Liberation and the Emergence of Separate Regimes, 1945-1947. Princeton University Press. p. 126.)

On September 9th, at a surrender ceremony, Hodge announced that the Japanese colonial government would remain in tact, including its personnel and its governor-general. After a major outcry, Hodge replaced the governor-general with an American and removed all the Japanese bureau cheifs, though he, in turn, enlisted the former Japanese bureaucrats as advisors.

Faced with mounting popular discontent, in October 1945 Hodge established the Korean Advisory Council. The majority of the Council seats were given to members of the Korean Democratic Party which had been formed at the encouragement of the U.S. and which was primarily made up of large landowners, wealthy businesspeople, and formers officials in the colonial government. A few members of the PRK were offered to join, but they refused and instead criticized the Council appointees for their collaboration with the Japanese.

United States didn't need to negotiate with the USSR to divide Korea amongst themselves.

They divided Korea as a reason to station US military troop presence in Japan.

Why fight so hard, defeat the Japanese, and not create your own US-backed, Pro-US regime in Asia-Pacific?

Korea is a pawn in a Superpower game between USSR and US. Now it's China and US.

I added this list for further discussion as I browsed internet and found it out.
It is something new, and new experiences discussion forums can provide.
Guess we always learn something new.

The US did not have forces in Korea when the Norks invaded. If the invasion didn't happen who knows how things would have turned out?

Fact that korea was still considered part of japanese empire back then, who would think korea was an ally of US?

This is like how the U.S are stationing there miltiary in Thailand against its neighbor like Burma,Laos,Cambodia,Vietnam, and China. Thailand is a pawn for the U.S activities in SEA, as the matter of fact. U.S base was in Thailand during the Vietnam War which corrupted and destroyed the Laotian,Vietnamese and Cambodian people today and now we are force the knee down to Thailand. I call this favoritism on the Thai side by the U.S cause and intetion.
BingBinG69
Also, today U.S and Thailand over look at Laos politically and inter-nationally if you read the news about development in Laos. Also, reading about the GMS "Greater Mekong Subregion" organization that the U.S created that seem not worth it for Laos at this time. All I see with Laos and Thailand is bitter enemies and chaos is about to explode pretty soon in Thailand in the near future. Even protest from the Red Shirt is just a minor one, until the THai king pass away is another worst political fear in Thailand.

During and after WWII, most western countries didn't have a strong background in Asian culture, ideology, and background. To them most Asians were alike. Same can be said of John Hodge, he really didn't have any clue on what to do with Korea and the diff. b/w Koreans and Japanese which is why he asked for Chiang Kai Shek's recommendations which resulted in the political comeback of Syngman Rhee (South Korea's 1st president).
