The European Parliament adopted a resolution condemning North Korea for its torpedo attack on a South Korean naval corvette, the Cheonan on Thursday.
On the last day of its June session in Strasbourg, France EU legislators adopted the resolution with overwhelming support.
This is the first of its kind against the communist regime in four years.
In 2006, the Parliament passed one over North Korea's human rights abuses.
Approved during its plenary session the resolution condemned North Korea for its torpedoing of the South Korean warship Cheonan saying that Pyeongyang's attack is a provocative act against peace and stability in the Korean peninsula.
The Parliament also supported the South Korean government's referral of the case to the UN Security Council as it showed disappointment toward China and Russia for still not having taken a clear position on the issue calling on both countries to exert a positive influence on North Korea.
The resolution also stated that humanitarian support should still continue to flow to North Korea regardless of the circumstances.
Meanwhile a United Nations Security Council resolution against North Korea is still waiting for the support of all five permanent council members to pass as the backing from two veto-holders Russia and China is still in the air.

Adoption of the resolution against North Korea is not only aimed at cutting the North from the rest of the world, but rather to show the world that illicit use of bellicose threats is not tolerated in our international society.
However, China and Russia are too half-hearted in this issue.
But let's think about this - why are so many nations condemning the North?
It's probably because people believe the Joint Investigation Group's claim that North Korea was involved in the sinking.
Since the North's involvement has been made clear by numerous investigations, China and Russia should not side with DPRK anymore.
Help from the international society, including China and Russia, is desperately needed now as the resolution needs to be adopted to show the North that it cannot continue its empty threats.

lol "why are so many nations condemning the North", ever noticed that its basically US & co. which were always on one side against "north" since loooong times ago, sure thats lots of nations but by far not the real "international" community. Some people may not like this but the days when american Alliance can dictate anything they want to the world is over, the "golden age" was just a few decades after fall of USSR.

I would agree that the EU Parliament is not exactly a powerhouse. While is it comprised of 28 nations, most of them are relatively inconsequential in international terms. The power in that body is held by Germany, France, UK, Spain and Poland, most of whom are close allies of the U.S. (Most because one never knows about the French.) But since the rest of the international community continues their silence, until the USSR and China make an official stance, this informal alliance is still dictating public opinion. I am not saying they should, but they are.

Small correction, USSR is no more, its Russia now.

Okay maybe they are still dictating public opinion, especially those of us who live in the west will hear most, but taking actions is becoming more difficult (even if china or russian dont step in) as the last few actions they are taken have put them into rather unfavorable position in world opinion, now there will be huge skepticism even if they have "evidence". In the first place if they were certain and have nothing to hide they shouldnt have set up such an onesided institution to investigate the incident.

Yep only a typo, but definitely a significant difference. And one that triggered another question. Given that Russia is no longer the power it was as the USSR, is their veto in the UN still as justified as it once was, or is the west just being careful not to ruffle too many feathers by not proposing their demotion? I don't recall much being said about it when the change was made.

Well UNSC consists of the major nations on the winning side of WW2, USSR has made as much impact (on euroasia continent) as USA, even as USSR broke down Russia still posess much of millitary power of the former block and even political influence over security issues of europe, so the west should be careful not to provoke the weakened bear (obviously they know that), besides the breakdown of USSR and reforming of Russia in the direction western style democracy is in the interest of western alliance, and a weakened russia is less of a threat and still most suitable nation to represent major part of the world. (They would like islamic or arab nations out of central/western asia more?)

Is anyone familiar with the ''Tonkin Ghosts'' incident ???

The United Nations has become the new league of nations, incompetent and weak. Nations talk about cooperation and solidarity but no one is willing to surrender an inch of sovereignty to the UN. Same with "free trade" its little more than everyone trying to exploit each other.
