Just a question, do they try to influence them, organize them or just say "You are a bunch of foreigner traitors but give us you money" confused.gif
XigonCongchua
They want to encourage the unity between Vietnamese at home and Vietnamese oversea. Viet Kieu are welcome to return to VN.

The only exceptions are the hard-core extremists of VNCH.
matigasngulo
ok, a while back i talked to south vietnamese guy who said that he went back to visit Vietnam. I was just wondering the Government would be actively courting the refugees from the South - btw in Germany there are both the Northern and Southern Viets anyway.
XigonCongchua
No courting. They'll be treated similar to foreign tourists.

But if you're a well-known VNCH activist who work for the overthrow of the regime then they won't allow you to enter the country.
matigasngulo
so i guess there is no program to allow them to vote for representatives to whatever you have as a parliament in VN ?

In the Philippines this is an idea that is floated but has never been implemented, i think only Italy has a functioning system of "overseas Italian" representatives.
XigonCongchua
Nah, oversea Vietnamese can't vote for anything in Vietnam.

People in VN can vote for representatives in something called Hội Đồng Nhân Dân (People's Assembly? I don't know how they translate that to English).
matigasngulo
I have to correct myself there: of course Filipino citizens can vote outside the Philippines, the plan is vote extra "Overseas" Parliamentarians. I don't it really makes a difference, since if you vote for the same actors as "direct" or "local" representatives or Senators you are exercising exactly the same right.

How easy would it be to get back a Vietnamese citzenship ? Are you actually allowed to naturalize as a foreigner ?
XigonCongchua
Hm I don't know.

The law of Vietnam says anyone born from a Vietnamese parent is automatically granted the Vietnamese nationality, unless they renounce it. So technically all oversea Vietnamese carry Vietnamese nationality (yes, dual nationality and citizenship is allowed in Vietnam). All Viet children born oversea will carry Vietnamese nationality. They might not be born in Vietnam but they are connected to Vietnam by blood. But they can't vote for the People's Assembly unless they come back to Vietnam and live.

For oversea Vietnamese, I think the biggest problem of returning to Vietnam is not obtaining a citizenship because that's like a thing they're given at their birth because of their blood connection with Vietnam, the biggest problem is buying a house and finding a sustainable job.

There won't be any conflict of interest for 1962VW part, with the current diplomatic maneuvers. icon_wink.gif
