Wandering around Phnom Penh, I have seen a statue of a woman, with long hair, and a pet crocodile. I am curious as to the identity of this lady. I have asked a few Cambodian people, but they find it difficult to tell me the story.

Her name, as I was told is: Nim Rom Sigh Sa (sa = hair) long hair

She is wearing a rather revealing top.

Yes, I know exactly what you are talking about. Even the Phnom Penh Post ran an article about the female statue some year ago. You can access the article with your subscription. embarassedlaugh.gif Your best bet however is to contact Tourism Ministry of Cambodia at the following link http://www.mot.gov.kh/KhmerCuisines.aspx?s...green&Ads=1 to learn more about the story behind this famous female stone statue. beerchug.gif Anyway, let me just share with you a faded broken outline of my memory of the stone lady statue.

That crocodile is not her pet at all. embarassedlaugh.gif Let us take a closer look at the name "Neang Roam Sigh Sock". The term "neang" = lady or goddess in this case. It is a title term. The term "Roam-Sigh-Sock" = to let down the long hair.

I vaguely remember the story but I do remember the gist of it though. embarassedlaugh.gif There was this one prince (forgot the name embarassedlaugh.gif ) who initially fell in love with a young ordinary lady who was a daughter of a hermit. So he promised her that he would load up his ship with the royal riches to present to her and to ask for her hand in marriage. However, the prince's royal parents prohibited him from marrying the ordinary girl and instead ordered him to make a marriage proposal to Neang Roam Sigh Sock.. Neang Roam Sigh Sock was of royal blood. So the prince loaded up his ship with the royal riches and set sail to the residence of Neang Roam Sigh Sock. However, along the way, the ordinary lady who was waiting for the prince's return noticed that the royal ship did not stop at her residence and instead went past it. So she got so mad and figured out the prince's betrayal. Consequently she ordered her faithful pet crocodile named Ah Thuun to thrash and turn over the ship and to kill the prince. Ah Thun the croc obeyed his female master faithfully and sped out to do the bidding. The prince fearful for his life and the destruction of his ship tried to offer various animals to the croc. So he tossed over some cages full of fowl and then some cages full of ducks. However, Ah Thun the croc simply refused to be distracted and said, "I only help my mom who feeds me". The prince was sure that he was going to get killed by Ah Thun so he called out to Neang Roam Sigh Sock to help save him. Upon hearing the cry for help from the prince, Neang Roam Sigh Sok let down her long hair and it magically soaked up the water to dry the land and to stop the fast swimming croc. As a result, the prince ship's went aground and became the present-day Mount Ship or Phnom Sompuv in the Battambang Province. The cages of fowl and ducks also became mountains known as Phnom Trung Mon trung tear. Ah Thun the croc also became a mountain called Mount Croc. The prince was saved from the certain death by Neang Roam Sigh Sock and she and he got a royal wedding and lived happily after. embarassedlaugh.gif

So that is the story behind the statue of Neang Roam Sigh Sock. I am sure you can find a number of themes expressed by this story. Hope this helps. beerchug.gif This story can be found in any of the Khmer folktales books. Thanks for asking.

Thank you for sharing this story. What i remember, that was Ah Thun, the croc, who got mad and wanted to revenge for his "mom". The odinary lady was just sad and even tried to prevent him not to turn over the ship or kill the prince.

Wasn't that 'ordinary girl' a princess too? From what I remember, an eagle grabbed her when she was a baby and dropped her off on the island and the hermit found her. What a tragedy, since the prince couldn't marry her because no one knew she was actually royal. XD

The way the prince met the girl was because he went to study under the hermit on that island.

In the movie version, the girl went into the cave to steal the fancy silk and jewelry of the hermit's deceased wife. She just wanted to look pretty for the prince's return. Well the prince never return. And the cave-shrine from where she stole the clothes was protected by a curse. The hermit was killed by spirit of the cave-shrine, since he made a promise to her to never let anyone touch it. Ah Thun was killed by Neang Rom Sai Sok (her hair was very long and she whipped his @$$ with her hair). And the the girl was also killed by the spirit after she saw her dead "son."

Neang Rom Sai Sok is not the same as, but I believe her image is based on Preah Mae Thorani or Neang Kong Hing.

Hmm, interesting!!

Neang Kong Hing, Who is Neang Kong Hing? This is the name of a status that we see in Phnom Penh.
Why do poeple call this status "Neang Kong Hing" while most of them think first to Neang Rom Sai Sok?

Neang Rom Sai Sok and Neang Kong Hing are two different?

They are different.

Neang Kong Hing is in a story with the Buddha. While Neang Rom Sai Sok is from a regional story that doesn't involve the Buddha.

Neang Kong Hing is depicted holding her long hair to the side. In her story, she soaks up the water with her hair and unleashes upon the demons to protect the Buddha while he was meditating. You often see her statue on Buddhist altars or in paintings.
