Let's start with the Indonesian capital city then (looks at Mas Maja laugh.gif whip.gif grrr)

WELCOME TO JAKARTA!

Welcomes monument in Jakarta

Introduction:

Established in the fourth century, the city became an important trading port for the Kingdom of Sunda. It grew as the capital of the colonial Dutch East Indies. It was made capital of Indonesia when the country became independent after World War II. It was formerly known as Sunda Kelapa (397–1527), Jayakarta (1527–1619), Batavia (1619–1942), and Djakarta (1942–1972).
Jakarta is the capital and largest city of Indonesia. Located on the northwest coast of Java, it has an area of 661 square kilometres (255 sq mi) and a 2010 census count population of 9,580,000. Jakarta is the country's economic, cultural and political center. It is the most populous city in Indonesia and in Southeast Asia, and is the twelfth-largest city in the world.

Shopping.
When planning a trip to Jakarta, consider spending a day at one of the many modern shopping malls the city has to offer. You may welcome a day off from tourist and cultural sites and enjoy spending time in air-conditioned comfort, where you can relax and shop without annoying hawkers. Therefore there are choices galore for shoppers!

Plaza Indonesia
Pacific Place
Plaza FX
Senayan City
Grand Indonesia
Pondok Indah Mall I

...and many, many more!

For a bargain, you can always go to:
Glodok, Jakarta's Chinatown
Pasar Baroe, a mixture of stores packed up in a very limited space
Jalan Surabaya, an open-air antique market on the border of Menteng District (where President Obama lived for a few years)

I was trying to give focus on one place/area in Indonesia per page (this page BALI), so I can update the first page to make a table of contents so that AFers can browse and find what they want easily embarassedlaugh.gif I wanted it to be organized, but no worries mas! thanks for your effort!
I too made a mistake ..too many photos and not so much info, the page takes minutes to load! LOL

I think either that Ragunan Zoo or Taman Safari Indonesia in Cisarua, coz in Taman Mini there's no baboon or orangutans, only birds and reptile park.

ANCOL DREAMLAND

Ancol Dreamland, an amusement park in north Jakarta, Indonesia, the largest integrated tourism area in South East Asia is one of the most attractive places serving the densely populated city of Jakarta. It has all the adventures people crave for; Sea World, Fantasy World, Atlantis Water Adventure and Marina Beach. This is Jakarta's largest and most popular recreation park. It is built on reclaimed beach land at the Bay of Jakarta, having, sea and freshwater aquariums, swimming pools, an artificial lagoon for fishing, boating, bowling, an assortment of nightclubs, restaurants, a steam-bath and massage parlors. The Ancol complex includes a Marina, Dunia Fantasi (Fantasy Land), a golf course, hotels and a drive-in theater. Shopping in Jakarta is good, that's for sure.
I think I made this photo in Mal Kelapa Gading in 2007.
At the moment they are running their "Lebaran Shoptacular Promo".
Correction : DEL pointed out that this photo is actually Mal Taman Anggrek.

Sumpit the "table of contents" idea is pretty cool, but I think that eventually I should make it into a "sub-forum" type of format so that each section can have its own thread and can continue to expand without any limit.
But in the meantime, let's continue as we are.

Hey the "Visit Indonesia 2010" trailer you provided in your first post above is great fun.
The Indonesian Ministry of Culture & Tourism produced this advertising campaign and they were also our sponsors for this years Indonesian Film Festival in Australia.
The trailer exists in three versions - 30 seconds, 60 seconds and 6 minutes (and I have the DVD icon_wink.gif ).
Nice to see it on Youtube, but try to imagine how it is when you see it on a huge cinema screen with an Australian audience and pumping out Dolby Digital sound yahoo.gif yahoo.gif
It totally rocked and everybody in the audience loved it.
I mean bule were going up to our special guest Jajang C Noer and asking her about the Indo tourism trailer laugh.gif How cool is that ?

Yes we can, but will it make the thread more interesting for foreigners? People rather see a brochure about the best things than to read a whole book about all the things. They'll get to the book once they're really interested. That's why I wanted it to keep it limited. We can make sub-forums but I doubt it will be limited :P we already have threads like beautiful pics of indo & best indo food etc, the pics keep on coming, AFers can look there if they're really into Indonesia
You can pin this thread if you want he he he beerchug.gif

Anyway.. back to the topic

Also known as Old Jakarta, and Old Batavia (Oud Batavia), is a small area in Jakarta, Indonesia. Dubbed "The Jewel of Asia" and "Queen of the East" in the 16th century by European sailors, Old Jakarta — or Batavia, as it was named by the Dutch — was once considered a center of commerce for the whole continent due to its strategic location and fertile resources.
As important settlement, urban center, and the center of commerce in Asia since 16th century, Oud Batavia is home of several important historical sites and buildings.

Ragunan Zoo

Ragunan Zoo is a zoo located in Pasar Minggu, South Jakarta, Indonesia. Its area is about 1.4 km². The zoo was established in 1864 and moved to its present location in 1966. It is inhabited by 295 species and 4,040 specimens.

The Schmutzer Primate Centre was opened in 2002, within the Ragunan Zoo but privately funded and managed separately. Dr Willie Smits of the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation designed the orangutan enclosure so that the orangutans have as natural an environment as possible. Thick dark glass allows visitors to see the orangutans while being invisible to them.

WELCOME TO JAVA!

The origins of the name 'Java' are not clear. One possibility is that the island was named the island after the jáwa-wut plant, which was said to be common in the island during the time, and that prior to Indianization the island had different names. There are other possible sources: the word jaú and its variations mean "beyond" or "distant". And, in Sanskrit yava means barley, a plant for which the island was famous. It was hence referred to in Indian, specifically Tamil literature by the Sanskrit name "yāvaka dvīpa" (dvīpa = island). Another source states that the "Java" word is derived from a Proto-Austronesian root word, meaning 'home'.

The area of Java is approximately 139,000 km2. The island's longest river is the 600 km long Solo River. The river rises from its source in central Java at the Lawu volcano, then flows north and eastward to its mouth in the Java Sea near the city of Surabaya. The island is administratively divided into four provinces (Banten, West Java, Central Java, and East Java), one special region (Yogyakarta), and one special capital district (Jakarta).

Cool contribution guys.... neway let me do my share...

In the mood to be an instant Indiana Jones or Lara Croft...? biggrin.gif Maybe ruins of temples across Indonesia would tempt you...
More specifics threads Beautiful Ancient Temples of Indonesia

Here's the temples...

Borobudur, the largest buddhist monument in the world. According to Sri Kahulunnan Inscription probably the original name was "Bhumi Sambhara Bhudara", the mountain of collective virtue of ten stages of Budhisattvahood. Bhara Bhudara was later simplify to be Borobudur.

Not far from Borobudur stood Mendut temple. Mendut original name probably Venuvana, "the temple of bamboo forest".

Mendut temple houses the grand statue of Dhyani Buddha Vairocana, at the left is Boddhisatva Avalokitesvara, at the right is Boddhisatva Vajrapani

And Pawon temple

Prambanan, the largest Hindu temple in Indonesia and Southeast Asia (The largest Hindu temple in SE Asia should be Angkor Wat, but after Angkor Wat was converted to be a Buddhist temple, well...). ;p

Imagine.., there was originally 237 temples stood in this Prambanan compound...

Walking through Prambanan at its heyday as if walking through forest of temples...

800 metres north from Prambanan stands Sewu buddhist temple. Originally known as Manjusrigrha temple (The house of Manjusri) one of important boddhisattva.

Actually Sewu is the second largest Buddhist temple in Indonesia after Borobudur. It consist of 257 temples

Ratu Boko Palace... several kilometres south of Prambanan, stands on a hill is the compound of Ratu Boko. It is not a temple, the actual function is not clear, probably a fortified palace or monastery.

The gate of ratu Boko Palace

Banyunibo buddhist temple, not far from Ratu Boko. In Javanese Banyunibo means "Water drops"

Barong hindu temple, also not far from Ratu Boko

Pustakasala, the latest discovery of Hindu temples burried under Mount Merapi volcanic ashes north of Yogyakarta in Universitas Islam Indonesia complex.

Krakatoa

Krakatoa, is a volcanic island made of a'a lava in the Sunda Strait between the islands of Java and Sumatra in Indonesia. The name is used for the island group, the main island (also called Rakata), and the volcano as a whole. The island exploded in 1883, killing approximately 40,000 people, although some estimates put the death toll much higher. The explosion is still considered to be the loudest sound ever heard in modern history, with reports of it being heard nearly 3000 miles from its point of origin. The shock wave from the explosion was recorded on barographs around the globe.
