Chinese History talks about a ferocious group of Miao people in central Kweichow who were of great strength. They wore full body armor into combat consisting of metal helmets, thick buffalo hide covered with copper plates and also covered their arms and legs with iron mail and thick iron bands.....They fought with Shield in one hand and a spear in the other and a dagger held between their teeth.....They carried powerful crossbows with poison tipped arrows that struck with amazing force and some crossbows were so large that they required three men to operate......WHERE CAN I LEARN MORE ABOUT THESE PEOPLE?????

mIna

No.....I don't think anyone knows about these Jiu-Gu.....it's so hard to find Info about it......I guess the only thing to do is ask Chinese historians.......

I am Hmong myself........I refer to Miao when I go back to the Sub-Groups in China because that is a little more accurate......Not all Miao considered themselves Hmong.....I'm hoping this group did! biggthumpup.gif

Your best bet is Chinese history books in China. But even if you did find information about them, it's most likely written in Chinese and needs translation.

There's a possibilty that some of the Hmong outside of China may be descended from them. In the mid 1740's a small group of Hmong people from Kweichow, refugees of the massive military campaign waged against them in that province between 1727 and 1740 crossed over the Chinese border and entered Indochina. One can only speculate whether or not this group that left Kweichow is the Jiu-gu.

Cool, but what I am also wondering is.....where are the artifacts, like the weapons and armor?....were they unique? Did they just abandon it and then future generations forgot about all that?

I would like to see what hmong weapons looked like during the time of china to the early wars with the laotian natives....
lokey
I am wondering about the legend behind the founded artifact as well. I viewed a tape that show of the 100 lbs spear that supposedly one of these hmong hero carried it. I think it would be wonderful if one of these artifact was snuck into the us to display to young folks like myself. It would be a positive tremedous impact on all of us and our future.

what goes around might come around...

Awesome picture, CYCLO! The style of clothing looks similar to what the Hmong men of Basha wears today [see picture below].

Wa_Meng_Cha
I've read books that talk about the last war the Hmong had with the Chinese. Where many Chinese generals campaigned unsuccessfully against the Hmong, until one general finally was able to infiltrate Kweichow (sp?) He took the Hmong prince, captive (or I believe the prince gave himself up to end the fighting to save his people) but the prince agreed to return to china with the general and when he came in front of the Chinese emperor, he was beheaded.

I believe that's what sparked the massive Hmong migration into the southeast asian countries (veitnam, loas, cambodia).

In a lot of the books written about Hmong people, (even the one's focused on more current history [vietnam war]) the Hmong people have always been recognized as "warriors" and "great fighters".

I have personally met white American Vietnam veterans who fought with the Hmong and they have all said the same thing. "Hmong people are fearsome fighters."

Hmong men, just look into yourself and your brothers, fathers, cousins. Think about their/your "Give a fu-k, ready to die mentality". It's something that's been taught inconspicously to us by our elders.

Actually.. your last statement.. that "give a fu ck ready to die mentality" is common amongst those of the lower class. Which is normal in people who have just migrated to a new country. Unless you were rich before you cannot just move to a new country and be rich either.

Although, I do think that there might be a genetic trait for madness amongst Hmong people. Where, there is an edge to that not really fearsome, but extreme behavior. I think, it's more of a survival instinct.. ?

That is because Miao is a minority group in China....and the Hmong is a subgroup of the Miao....so not all Miao will consider themselves Hmong. For instance, all Americans are not Asian Americans...so they will not consider themselves so.....Actually...more like....Hmoob....White Hmoob will not consider themselves Green Hmoob....but all in all, they are both Hmoob. Miao is more like that. And I prefer to refer to myself as Hmoob.....because Miao is what the Chinese call us....and it means more like a young shoot/seedling......not the derogatory meaning the Laotians gave us....prrr prrr....cat..or wahtever.

History traveled by word of mouth so we will never truly know our history. The Chinese did not like the Hmong so they could have alter "their' history books to say what they want about us....We lost all our history so we will never know unless time traveling was possible. But it's so ancient that some of the stories must have a tiny bit of truth , though not all.

We are mostly all related. Our traditions all connect to eachother even though we have been drifting away for so long throughout the ages. There are Hmong/Miao in China are working in uncovering our past connections. I still have to go through some of their books...they're in Chinese so I'm slow ahahaha.

But anyways, wow that was back from 2004! lmao....I was still curious back then. laugh.gif

^I'm not going to be too fast saying Hmong and Miao are the same or not. There's still a lot of debate going on about this.

Anyway, LIL, have you looked into that Chinese history or something forum? They have a lot of things there about the Chinese people (and I don't mean the HANS only).

I don't believe in the genetic trait reason. If you do a google search on the most violent race you'll find that Asian are not on the top of the list. Here is one chart

http://youthviolence.edschool.virginia.edu...Race%202006.jpg

I've been to many Hmong conferences and I've heard many experts say that the Hmong people is a peaceful people. They like to live in groups and away from places with a lot of troubles. (this is the reason why the Hmong people lives up in the mountains and areas that not many people wants to live) If this is correct, which I do believe so then it would explain why when it comes to battle...the Hmong people are great warriors. The Hmong are kind and loving people but if you stick your nose into their territory they will fight till death to protect their culture and way of life. And to add to that, I think the fearsome also have something to do with the culture too.
