Displaced families return home despite fear, warnings of more landslides

Residents of Dingalan in Aurora, Gabaldon in Nueva Ecija and Real in Quezon have started to make their way back to their homes to take advantage of the fair weather after fleeing their homes due to landslides and floods during the reign of typhoon Winnie last week, radio DZMM reported Saturday.

Reports said a small number of public utility vehicles have started to ply their usual routes to Dingalan. Authorities have also started the rehabilitation of roads to Gabaldon, which were previously rendered inaccessible by huge rocks, logs and mud from Sierra Madre.

While transportation remains scarce and difficult, a number of people insisted on going back to their towns by foot.

There is still no electricity in the affected towns, and people are relying on food supplies delivered by the government, relief groups, and volunteer organizations.

Some residents are also still hesitant on returning to the stricken areas, fearing recurrence of the tragedy.

Meanwhile, residents of Real have also started their way back home, despite the Department of Public Works and Highways’ advisory to leave their homes for good.

DPWH Region 4 director Conrado Galsim Jr. warned of the possibility of another landslide in some portions of Sierra Madre if rains continue to fall.

He said the slope of the mountain may completely fall apart as the land has gone shaky due to incessant logging and kaingin operations.
