so why? i've seen young Indians in their early twenties growing moustaches and making them look 10yrs older. is this a "manhood" kinda thing?
IniTiaL V.
my friend is indian he said that he isnt allowed to cut his hair (i dont believe him though, hes got to cut it one day)

not sure about mustaches maybe they arent allowed to shave, ill ask him tomorrow
HikaruVenus
i don't think they're not allow to shave cos my indian male friends don't have moustache, but i notice that among all other asians, indians have the highest % of men having moustaches so i thought it could be their tradition or some symbolic meaning to them. shrug.gif
technolickingkitty
were do u live? most indians down here don't have moustaches (especially younger men) and I can't think of any Indian actors (under 40) that have moustaches....in fact there is only two Indians I've seen with moustaches but they are both old actors (over 50)

not cuttin the hair is a sikh thing.....so unless he is a sikh indian.....i can't believe it either
arg357
^ yeah your friend is probably sikh, theyr not allowed to cut any any of their hair as far as i know but all my sikh friends cut their hair

and about the moustache thing, i think they do it because they think it makes them look cool
Jupiterz
lolz... my friend said the difference between male and female is that male has moustache and female doesnt..... he is not Indian...... funny reason....lolz. i told him there are women who have moutache too
ndnboi
Yes it is a manly thing. As you go into rural areas of India many men would have mustaches. I read in an advice column once about a boy who couldn't grow facial hair and was made fun of. icon_twisted.gif

You took the words right outta my mouth.

Cos the Indian men see it as a sign of masculinity...
See the website i've found:

I've never seen a young Indian man with a moustache, is this a new trend?
AgentBach
I've seen one Indian guy at my college with a moustache. I think alots of guys try to grow a beard or a moustache when they hit puberty. Just a sign telling the girls "Hey hey, look at me, I'm a man now." XP Even though they just look like they glued pubic hair onto their face.
Nadja
embarassedlaugh.gif Eeeeww, that description reminded me of being in middle school and high school and how sometimes the boys back then would refuse to shave even though they couldn't grow a real beard yet. They'd have this gross looking peach fuzz. It was just nasty. help.gif I think they thought they were hot $hit because of it. crazy.gif

i'm surprised some of you have never/hardly seen a young indian man below 50 with a moustache. i live in Singapore and we have lotsa Indians and Bangladeshi nationals working here. ALOT of them have moustaches. they're not Singaporean Indians and you can more or less guess that from their dressing. growing moustaches for indians is not a new trend. it has been their culture all along.
technolickingkitty
well I guess it must be over there cuz as I've said I've never seen them in movies and in South Florida we have a large concentration of Indians (both from the islans and from India) and I've yet to see any under 35 and only a handful over 35-50 range

in fact I just went two weeks ago to an Indian fair (close to 3000 peepz) and yeah....nothing except a handful of older men shrug.gif

maybe their are shiks? those I believe were the majority that had the moustaches down here too embarassedlaugh.gif

Hmmm...well I can't say that I've seen any Indians in the places I've lived in America. But in Korea there are always a lot of Indian immigrants and I've only ever noticed older men with moustaches... icon_neutral.gif

*edit: Wait, that part about not seeing any Indians in America isn't entirely true. My doctor is Indian. I forgot about him because I don't really think of him as any ethnicity...or really as a human, since he's a doctor. And you know doctors aren't human. embarassedlaugh.gif He's fairly young I'd say, not as young as the guys being talked about here. Probably mid-thirties. He's clean-shaven.

Let me clear your confusion. As everyone knows India is a fusion of different culture and religion. Cultural and social prevailing is totally different in South India v/s North India , same holds true for West India and East India.
Generally speaking, having moustache is manly thing, specially in villages and in South India. Socially in south India, having moustaches is sign of mature man. People in other parts of India people, except sikhs, keep experimenting with their looks (with/without moustaches, as people do in other parts of world) but south indians are more reluctatnt to such experiment.
You can see the difference in movies also. In Bollywood movies (Hindi) most of the hero are without any Moustaches but in South Indian movies (Tamil, Telegu , Kannada etc) most of the actor keep moustache.

Hmm... tatz so true... icon_smile.gif

I think its hott when the mustaches are well thinly groomed on a young gentleman.
Tenjikuronin
Yeah, Sikhs follow the 5 K's and one of those K's is "Kesh" meaning hair. All following sikhs are required to keep all hair on their head (including mustache + beard). In fact, that's why they wear Turbans, to cover their hair and hold their long hair.

As for as other Indians keeping mustaches, I have no clue...maybe they like facial hair?

I know that in Rajasthan they keep those enormous cut beards and mustaches which look kind of cool.....
